Take out the glow plug and stick it in a fully charged igniter and see how bright it gets. If it's good, take off the air cleaner and put a little fuel directly into the carb and see it it will run for a few seconds.

I had this problem sometimes the engine has too much fuel and just starts and then dies what you could do is tune it a little while it has the glow plug on for just a while not too long thats not good and just tune it enough to hear the engine get more power into it hope that works

i turn the trim up when i start it and hold it when it revs high. but then when i turn the trim down it dies. like it wont stay started with the 1mm opening at idle

i think I'm just going to take the engine out and reseal it anyways. just to make sure there is no leaks. it couldnt hurt

can you see fuel going thrue the lines....its weird it will run when you put fuel into the carb.

Thats a good question - what happens if you blow through the tube attached to the exhaust and block / pinch the end attached to the carb? Does it feel sealed?

****then again if it'll keep going when revin high via trim just not when bought back down it must be sealed..... I think...? :D

The 1mm opening is just a rule of thumb starting point. If it needs more to idle, open it more. As long as you're not idling fast enough to chatter the clutch you're good.

Yep. I've got the same (well, VX-18) engine as Matty and the idle screw has it set as almost halfway open. It still wants to stall out when it gets warm. Has almost no compression at cold too.

is it ok to use the trim knob to make this adjustment instead of turning the idle screw?

also i spend all day yesterday seling up my car. just to make sure i had no air leaks. i didnt try it out yet today cuz i still have to stick the engine back in the car and then put some new fuel lines in it and i bought a fuel filter. if it isnt that I'm still stumped on why its starting and than stalling.

oh and i bought i new glow plug and ignitor. the other one i had was crap and wasn't giving it enough heat. i got a nice one with a meter. i think its called dynamite or something like that. anyone know if this is a good one?

i have the same igniter its rechargeable and i have not had a problem just charge for at least 10 hrs..sometimes the metter acts up but i just hit it and it worked fine.i also have a igniter that uses a c battery and i can change the battery.and yes you can use your trim but you will need to adjust your idle once you get running i would think but get more opinions on that

I'm going to get a C battery igniter for backup, because I just hate it when I'm trying to break one in or something that requires a lot of starting and stopping and just when you get ready to enjoy it the battery dies! So I'm going to get something where I can just put in a fresh battery and go!

thats why i got the c battery as well just slap a new battery in and your good to go.i had the same problem with break-in and the rechargeable would die just as i needed it the most

mattyfats, I know that you've had a problem with blisters on your hand, and I thought I would let you know of a quick fix. Whenever you are getting ready to go out side and crank it up, put on a glove. I never think aobut it until after I have blisters, but it woks good if you can prevent them. I use my Mechanix glove because I can still pick up small things and it doesn't restrict the use of my hand like some bigger gloves do.

great i hope that the new ignitor and sealing up the engine makes it start like it was before the crash =[. ill let you guys know what happens. I'm gonna go mess with it in a little bit

Yes, while you're tuning it. When it's right you need to set your idle screw to that RPM, otherwise it will shut off when you apply the brake.
