I could talk all day on this topic!! I’ve built a handful of really fast LMTs for myself and my buddies and they all have race wins to their names. I’m going to give you my absolute best recommendations based on what works/worked for me.
Servo saver: Treal saver. Black spring. Tightened all the way down.
*Add CPE stainless steering links (their plastic rod ends act as the weak link and take the shock out of the servo when smashing into something head on)
Servo: MKS HBL-550
*or buy the most servo (highest torque/fastest) you can for your money and make sure to program the BEC to get as much voltage to it as possible. Amazon servos don’t fair well in the LMT.
Steering tip: Get rid of the stock wheels and tires. They weigh a full pound more than a set of Renegades mounted on Tributes and all that weight is hard on any servo.
Shocks: Most hate to believe it, but the stock LMT shocks are actually incredible performers for the weight of a stock chassis truck. Rebuild them with the Losi 22 x-ring kit TLR233005, add silicone grease of your choice throughout to prevent leaking. Start with stiff springs, 30wt oil, and remove all preload to raise the lower links in parallel with the ground.
If you want to make an investment and have an even better performing truck, replace the lower links with trailing arms and mount a set of GMade Aeration 103mm shocks on the trailing arms instead of over the axle. Stiff springs, 40wt oil…it’ll turn on a dime and handle like a rabid chihuahua. (Setup pictured below)
My race trucks were carbon HackFab Starfighters but my freestyle truck ran the stock shocks, built with x rings but different oil, spring, and preload settings.
I also reccommend Treal upper links to remove all the lateral slop from the LMTs sloppy stock links. Here’s a before and after example:
