What's wrong with you guys??? Dirty minds!
I'm looking to upgrade the turnbuckles and steering rods to 3.5mm rods with 5.8mm balls and ends.
What I'm finding is 3mm x 5.8 mm balls
or
3.5mm x 6.8mm balls
I could drill but I'm thinking this would weaken my endlinks and that sort of defeats my purpose here.

I need a 3.5mm rod end to fit a 5.8mm ball.

Whatayagot??? 🤣

Why not drill 3mm rod ends to accept 3.5mm turnbuckles? .25mm per side shouldn’t hinder strength I wouldn’t guess.. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔

Upon further inspection-it may very well be overkill, or reinventing the wheel a bit.. Tekno’s are absolute tanks, and overbuilt by design-and their 1/10 buggy, and truggy both run 3mm turnbuckles with 5.5mm balls..🤷🏻‍♂️💪

But as I said-if you wanna do it; I’d simply drill the stock rod ends to 3.5mm, and buy surplus of them.. Assuming you found some Ti turnbuckles in 3.5mm thread, and the length you want.. I’m sure you know the deal-if one part doesn’t break; it’s gonna go to the next weakest link (see what I did there? 🤣)… IE; the rod end..

Personally-it I had to have 3.5 turnbuckles, and bigger balls (assuming yours are on the smaller side 🤣), I’d run the more than capable Tekno 5.5mm hard coated balls, drill Tekno rod ends to 3.5mm (their plastics are unbeatable), and assuming your sourced 3.5mm x XXmm Titanium turnbuckles.. That would be leaps and bounds stronger than the factory stuff FOR SURE, and readily available.

Its one of those things right? Like if .5mm isn't too much to take off, adding .5mm doesn't seem crazy either.
The ball size of 5.8 is stock so I'd like to keep with it if possible.
I'd just like get this car "nice" so if its those Avid turnbuckles that make me smile...
Avid is a Cosworks dealer but they don't list the Cosworks axles that I'm thinking I'll need.
I will see what they say about my improper rod! 🤣
I'm not stuck on those but boy they are pretty and yes, prob overkill. Perfect!

Auto merge.. recheck my reply to see if you got it all, lol.. I hate that feature has such a long timer here..🤣

I understand not wanting to go smaller-but if you went the Tekno rod ends, and subsequently their smaller balls-I can absolutely guarantee they’re far stronger than Kyosho 1/10 stuff based on the plastics alone. So clearly-that being said; if you did drill them to 3.5mm, they’d be absolute dumptruck level imo…🤣

Also-keep in mind that not all turnbuckles are the same size at the thread OD, as the “meat portion”.. So while they may be 3.5mm “in the center/unthreaded portion”, they do like to keep them the same as stock at the thread OD.. Some STILL will make them 3.5mm all the way across, and you just force the rods in them, as it’s only .25mm larger per side of the threads.. 😉

All this depends on the manufacturer. I’d likely just talk to the boys at Avid, tell them what you wanna do, and take their advice… I highly doubt your turnbuckles will be a weak link with that ride. 🍻🤘

@CertifiedMike faaaaakkkkkin’ automerge strikes Lilmotah down once AGAIN…🤣🤣🤣

Same here. I add to my posts all the time and don't see i'm doing it! 🤣
I think if I go with the 3.5, the drill might be the only option.
I've been looking and I haven't found the right ends yet.
3mm isn't a terrible option either.
I'm hoping Avid can recommend for or against drilling based on experience.
It would be so much worse to have a bunch of very pretty, broken turnbuckles! 🙄🤣

3mm would be a great option imho, but believe me; I DO understand you wanting to go bigger.. I highly doubt you’re gonna shave to worry about broken turnbuckles no matter what route you go..

So now we've come "full circle" with the post title and "bigger is better" 🤣🤣🤣

I thought a new set of rod ends in 5.8 was my ticket. Maybe they have them on the shelf at Avid and my google-foo is fooked???
3mm isn't all bad and maybe Avid has a super sexy set in 3mm also just sitting on the shelf.

I'm not buying just this second. I'm looking into longer a arms for this build so since my titanium turnbuckle stretcher is in the shop this week...

I want to build the car on paper and then make it happen.

I will look into Tekno ends for certain!
The Kyosho didn't break but wore out over time.
I don't want to add a problem by weakening things further but I agree at this level, .5mm should change much.

Wow.

I thought it was just me. Yeah, that super long timer on here, 👋 @WoodiE 👋, would be nice if it was trimmed down to five minutes. Right now, I think the auto merge timer is at least 30 minutes.

What platform are we talking about? I know some of my past, and present rides would have/have had clearance issues when I upgrade ball studs, and rod ends.

Yes, sorry, I've been having some tech issues.
The kit is an old Kyosho Optima Mid.
There are ball studs for the lower shock mounts (pretty positive is 3mm) with short ends but the rest seem just a typical ball end that any other kit would have.
Going bigger might be a clearance issue esp on steering.
When I reassemble I can check to see how tight it is if it matters.

Def 5.8mm balls
Stock rod are 3mm.
