rubber boots on shafts

so how important are the blue rubber boots that you see on new drive shafts or drive lines? does it really help or do they just not work at all or stop working after some time?

It is always a good idea to have boots on your cv or slider shafts.

Helps keep them cleaner but isnt a must have

On a dogbone, it's no big deal, but on a cvd or slider, you should have them.

I don't pay much attention on my revo. They tear pretty early in their lives and when the ears that the x pins go through gets slop, I replace the whole shaft anyway which is about once every year or so. Can normally get a set of 2 on ebay for pretty cheap, so I keep a spare set on hand.
