Just read that ROAR is banning LiPo's packs next year. That is in electric cars or as rx packs in nitro cars. Nice job assbags, your going to gain a lot of popularity with that one!

Is it a safety or performance issue?

I would hazard a guess at safety. Until LiPo becomes as "idiot proof" as nicad/nimh, it'd be safer to ban them, then to have someones' hand blown off while marshalling.

I would guess both, lipos give an unfair advantage to those who are stuck using nimh. And the few asshats that don't monitor the charging and discharging of their lipo packs are giving them a bad reputation.

I would assume that its a liability issue. All ROAR Events are covered by a group event policy for personal injury. Il be willing to bet its an insurance premium issue.

I'm assuming safety, but the tidbit I read was an excert from the minutes that made it just sound like they did it in passing.

What are the benifits to lipo's? They run longer or what?

Lipos packs run longer and have a higher discharge capability than a comparable nimh pack with the same mah rating. They also weigh about half as much as nimh.

The drawbacks are they become instable internally when charged or discharged beyond their rated capacities. They can also become unstable when punctured or damaged in a crash.

they smaller in size too? Thats what I've been looking for. Something with a higher mah, without the extra space.

they can be smaller....you can get the cells in lots of sizes and make a pack (wouldn't recomend monkeying with that though)......I read there was a newer battery technology coming out soon that was alot more stable than lipo (I thought it was here I read it)....they showed a nail being driven through a cell and it not bursting.....I'm real freaked on using my TC w/ the lipo pack...My ESC doesn't seem to have a low voltage cutoff so I have to sort of guesstimate my run times.....I want to get one of those batt circuits that do the cut off before I really run it hard......
