If its an electric you can do that. or you can buy/make a splitter and control both fans with your 3rd channel if you want.
The fan has a receiver plug that only accepts 2 of the "prongs" from the receiver. Is this fine or do I need to make a splitter to accept the plug?

you can still plug it in. just make sure you hook it up to the positive and negative. The third wire is a signal wire which isnt needed for the fan. Your receiver should have it marked which pin is the signal pin and which side is the negative pin. The positive pin is always in the middle.
