bought some longer battery straps but when I tried them on I realize they're so slightly thicker than the old ones that came with the car, and so I can't thread them through these slits (in the picture below, you'd want to slot them top-down on the outer side - the side where the mud guard is, slide the strap under the tray and slot them bottom-up on the inner side)

any idea how i can maybe pry these slits wider? have tried inserting a round tool but that doesn't leave enough space to actually slot the strap in)

Option 1 go under and around the battery trey. Maybe use 2 if possible.

Option 2 use scissors or a razor blade and thin the strap width.

I'd say you got enough material on the inside/outside of the battery strap slots to work with. Then again, I don't know how much you need to open things up. Most of the forces, when tightening up the strap(s), will be applied to the bottom of the tray, right?

Is buying a better fitting strap out of the question here?
Seems like that would be my first option.

Just to verify, you do mean too thick, not too wide, correct?

I would also use a Dremel tool to widen the slot like @RustyUs mentioned.

Just don't slip!!! ;)

decided to ignore the slits together and wrapped the straps round the battery tray, it "works" (the straps sometimes slide back and forth just a little bit but they still do their job), and yes they are indeed too thick

If you don't want to buy new straps, you can try glueing them to the bottom of the tray to keep them from shifting side to side.
