Hello all, I have been reading some of the threads and you guys seem to know your stuff, so here goes, I apologize for the long thread.

I am new to this hobby and have a Traxxas Rustler (electric), I have done some hop ups to it, mainly the motor, slipper clutch stuff, and so on. I love it, I don't race or compete, I just play around with it. I am considering getting into competing though, but thought I would go with nitro.

What I am asking you guys is what is a good nitro monster truck to buy. I have been looking at the 1/8 scale HPI Savage 25, Duratrax ThunderQuake, and the Traxxas T-Max.

I just recently read about this thing made by XTM racing, I think called the Xcellorator, it looked real cool, but I don't know much about the racing part of it.

What would you guys suggest, or would you suggest I start with a 2wd nitro, like a nitro rustler, evader st, or something from HPI, associated, etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm not looking at spending a lot of money, since this is just a hobby of mine, less than 500 bucks if I went with a Monster truck or around 400 or less if I go with a stadium truck.

Thanks, Darin.

You mentioned that you are looking to compete? I take that to mean racing? If so, what are the clases that they race at your track? If they race more than one class (stadium, buggy, monter truck) which class is the most popular?

Also, scratch the duratrax off your list if you go the monster truck route, it is NOT a very good rig. The T and the savage are great, I know the T can be set up to race very well, but I am not to sure on the savage, for racing. It is a kick ass truck though

The T has a .15 and the savage has a .21 engine.
As mentioned above, what classes are offered at the track you will be racing at. **Usually there are different classes for the two different size engines.

Dave has you off to a good start. Make sure you're buying a truck that's appropriate for the racing classes offered. Also, check around locally a bit. Go out the the track on a race day and see what the hot shoes are running. Also see what trucks your LHS has a lot of parts support for. Trust me, you will break something. And it helps if you don't have to go far to get it fixed.

good point ed, my local track just races T's- small block

Track classes?

Sorry I don't have the information you guys asked about, I haven't really looked into that yet. I know there is a track here where I live. I will look into that very soon so as to help me in my purchase.

What is generally the most difficult class to race in, is 2wd stadium trucks more competitive. Like I said, I am new to this and don't know much about it. I suppose they usually have stock classes, or beginner races? I would fit in there. I'm not a very competitive person, I just want to have fun, and since I can't talk any of my buddies into buying an RC car then I'm thinking I'll have to go to one of these races.

Thanks for the info though. I think right now I'm leaning toward the Savage 25.

The best advice I have it to go to the track and see what is popular in your aria. All tracks are different.

You may also want to make the choice on what is available at your Local Hobby Shop (LHS). For the most part this is where you will be getting parts when the brake. Look to see what they stock and more importantly what they don't stock.

Classes:
Tracks group the RCs. A group of like RCs make a class. Classes keep the competition fair. It just wouldn't be fair to have a BMW raving a VW would it? Yet VWs racing together would be a class.

I totally agree I just had to nit pick this part though.

Again off topic - did u know that the V10 u mention is a Turbo Diesel? We dont get that here, but we do get the V8 and V12. I have driven both at the local dealer (i used to work there, and my roomate is a tech there) The v12 was a dog. The V8 rocked. Wierd, woulda thought it was the other way around.

One of the LHS around here race a savage class and it is something else, them guys have alot of money in them trucks.
They have a 1/8 buggy class also, and a small 1/10 stadium truck class, but they are mostly racing the TMAXX and SAVAGE.

and the Jetta looks better than that car humboldtblazer, lol

:OT: :OT: :OT:

i would say go with the t-maxx. if your new pretty much everyone knows about them so they can help you out. only reason i would go duratrax (which i did) is for stadium trucks- there pretty nice, well my st pro is a little too nice, dont try to drive when wet, i so many things tonight it wasn't even funny....
