the new traxxas 3.3 looks good, i know putting a traxxas in an hpi is like putting a ford in a chevy... but it looks like a great powerplant...
i also like the fantom motors. mine were ALWAYS running super cool (i had 2 15s and an 18) and super reliable no matter what. look at their 18 usually start up first or second pull like clockwork. need little tuning
those are the best recomendations i can think of for the money...

id get a fantom 15 honestly. but i didnt know if you wanted to run something bigger or whatever... i expect my 3.3 in the rustler to be totally insane. thats what brakes are for

yeah, if you want to keep parts from breaking, id be carefull to select a good but not too powerful motor. the traxxas 2.5 is a great motor. always runs well and its fast without breaking drivetrain parts. since its for an MT with 4wheel drive, i think you could get away with more power because of the way they are built. so a fantom 15 or maybe xtm 18 or something would be a good motor to try....
if you can find a traxxas 2.5 used or something, pick it up, and if you think it needs more power after that ... you can send the 2.5 to traxxas and get a 3.3 for half price.
OS 18 CV-R(X). Good solid engine with a decent amount of power. Relativly cheap as well. It's also easy to find one that will drop right in.
If I remember right, the MT2 is a side exhaust, rotary, standard shaft right?

yeah OS are reliable. I've never heard of anyone having problems with them , I'm just not sure if they have enough power...
You shouldn't need to swap the carb... unless you mean just to rotate it. That's easy. Loosen the sinch bolt, turn the carb, push it down, tighten the bolt back up.
Enough power for a 1/10 stadium? I don't see why not.
I checked that stats at tower:
HPI T-15 ($78): 1.2HP @ 29K RPM
HPI 18SS ($135): 1.5HP
OS 18 CV-R ($110): 1.35 @ 28
The HPI 18 has .15 more hp than the OS (at least on the books) but it doesn't say at what RPM.

Next question, Is that enough of a jump in power to justify the extra money? The T-15 @$78 vs the OS 18 CV-R @$110, I do have a budget for this and it is tight. (Head book keeper tells me that) lol

what kind of budget are we talking? whats your max?
a traxxas 3.3 is like 150 bucks and has more then enough juice, it actually shouldnt be so bad with the extra weight in the front of the truck for the 4wd

I'm not sure. I didn't have the t-15 when I had my HPI Nitro MT (predecessor to the MT2), it had a nitrostar 15. It was a very dead engine with minimal power at low rpms. I replaced it with the OS 18 and it really brought the truck to life. It had way better accelleration off the line, ran cooler, ran more consistant and gave me good top speed.

the os will have more grunt then the t15 because its bigger displacement= more torque and the higher hp number SHOULD mean more top end. but you can't always trust those numbers.
whats the max you can spend on a motor? that will be the determining factor here since all the engines mentioned are great basher engines
