well, now that work seems to be settling in; i decided to get back into the RC game. my only problem is, my power supply decided to take a dump 5 minutes into charging my radio pack.

for the first time in about 5 months i took out my charger (Hyperion EOS0610i DUO) and power supply (Chargery 12v CYA12) and plugged it in. set the charger to peak my reciever batteries and 5 minutes later it just stopped.

no funny noises, no smoke nothing. it just stopped and shut down. i've opened the case and there are no burn marks or blown transistors (from what i can tell).

can anyone recommend a decent power supply unit? i'd like to keep the cost low given the amount of free time i have. i've looked at Radio Shack and Tower, but honestly i have no idea what make is good VS crap.

Thanks

What volt/amp output are you looking for? From reading I've done, checkpoint and muchmore are pretty good brands. I've had good luck with MRC chargers, but never had a need for a power supply. They have a 10A supply that is fairly cheap. As does OFNA.

@ Olds - Thanks for the help. I looked at the OFNA one earlier today as well as the Dynamite one. both are priced about the same so they are leading the pack right now. hopefully a few more people can add their opinion on items they used and where they got it.

as for volts/amps - the PS i had was a 12v/12amp one that the LHS said would be fine for the charger. Should i go higher/bigger for the Hyperion charger?

From what I know about electronics, getting a power supply that is at least 50% more than what you need is proffered. If your charger draws 10 amps, get a supply that puts out 15A to have a longer lasting setup. If your charger draws 10 and your PS puts out 10, then your running the PS at max capacity which usually will give it a short life.

Just like with anything else I guess. Nothing lasts very long when it's running 100% all the time.

Since the charger has the ability to push out 10A, I'd suggest getting a PS that has 15A stable output so you can get all the grunt out of the charger.

Looks like these would give you all the power you would ever need with that charger:

The 10A ones would probably work, but you would have issues running a high charge rate to two packs and would more than likely have to charge at 4A or less.

This one seems to be a good inbetween:

Just enough extra to probably work well.

I have been using a Pro Peak 20Amp power supply. I have had it for about two years now and it has been rock solid. Puts out 20Amps @ 13.8V. I have ran three ICE chargers off of it at one time with no issues. They were actually pulling down a bit more than 20amps at the time but it held up well to the challenge.

Or thin one with the cool digital read out and dual out puts

@olds and Joey - Thank you for the input. its much appreciated. i like the checkpoint one and then pro peak. i'm gonna take a ride to the new LHS and see if they have either in stock. if not, i'll flip a coin and order from Tower. again thanks for the help!

Joe I had one almost just like it years ago (older model) and I would use it to test car stereos and amps ect....you are correct it is a solid power supply and VERY good for the money.

I used to sell that brand of power supply many years ago and never had a problem with them. Most of the people that used them were ham radio operators.

Thanks for all the help!! the LHS was a bust so its looking like an online order1

I'm sure you didn't overlook the obvious, but are you sure there's no reset button or fuse installed? There's always that specific smell that goes with a burned out component.

@ Rolex, no fuse that that i could see but i'm not really 100% sure what i'm looking for. i'll post up a pic of the innards tomorrow. if u dont taking a peak for me...
