I was so close to having the data recovered. I was previewing the pictures. I was showing my wife..... "Hey look at this!" There they all were, the pictures we thought were lost. Right there! This is really a kick in the nuts.

sounds like the drive itself took a dive, when it starts clicking the drive is on its last leg. you can try the ice trick... just make sure you dont get it wet. A cold drive will sometimes last a little while longer, so you can pull the data.

Yeah... I tried cooling it down.... and nothing. I figure the drive was on its last leg anyway... and then having it run being read for 24 hours straight was too much for it. I figure it just got to hot and it was all it could handle. The drive will be sent out UPS next day air @ $72 to Navato California. Whatever data that they can recover will be sent back to me on a 320GB External Drive with a 1 year warantee for aprox. $1780. Now that is there "Economy" service.... 5 to 7 business days after they recieve the drive. The good news is that we could pay less.... but that means they were not able to recover all the data, which is bad. The good news is it will not be any more expensive, the price is capped. They assure me that they will more than likely be able to recover the data. The drive will have to be worked on in their "Clean Room" which looks like the Center for Disease Control".... pretty high tech. So with the cost of shipping, the cost for the software that almost worked, and now sending it to the "Pros" I am now at almost @ 2,000. What an expensive mistake! I guess this is no different than if the hotwater heater went bad.. or the fridge.... Sh** happens... right?

In all honesty, I wish you the best of luck getting your data back. This time make sure you back up everything and go to your bank and get a safe box and leave a copy of everything there. Update that at least once a year.

I don't know about your computer or OS, but I run the Vista automatic backup. I have a 1 TB external enclosure running in RAID configuration that's hooked up to my computer. The OS automatically runs a total backup every Wednesday and Sunday at 2:00 AM (so technically that is Monday and Thursday). The RAID is set up as a backup instead of high speed configuration, so it's copying the data exactly the same to two hard drive, so if one should fail the other will be there. It's nice that it does it automatically, that way it doesn't leave me to procrastinate and things like that. For your pictures, you could get a 16GB flash drive or two as a way to have an extra backup of the dic, and put them in a safe or something. The drive is really small, and should last a really long time in the event that the other stuff burns up or something. I just take the most important pictures of family and such and put them on a flash drive and keep it in the safety deposit box.

$2000 :whhooo:, but it's hard not to pay it when you stand losing all the priceless pictures of your children. I'm assuming they'll dismantle your HD and read the individual platters to recover the info. Do you still have to pay the fees if they can't recover the data?

Yeah... I am definitely going to be a little more diligent in backing up the data we hold dear. I have a fire safe in the basement, that will have a copy and I will keep one in a safty deposit box off site. I never want to repeat the events that have led me to spending a small fortune. I could have bought my Slash and upgraded to BL for less than half of what it has cost me to recover this data! LOL

Yes... they will take the drive to there "Clean Room" , dismantle the drive, recover the contents, copy them to a brand new 320GB external, and send it back to me. There is no charge if they can't recover any data, no standard fee or anything like that. If they can't recover data you don't pay a dime other than the shipping costs. Also the price they are charging me are set at $1,600, it can go no higher. That price is also what I will pay if they can recover the entire drive. I will pay less if they are not able to recover data, which is prorated based on what they recover. They do not charge you per file recovered.. but they do subtract money for every file they can't succesfully recover. What they call successful, is data that they can not only recover... but can recover and is fully functional. I don't pay for a file if it is not fully 100% in working order. So it is very expensive, but at least I know that whatever data I get back will be 100% saved.

I think it is going to take some time for sure. She is not real happy at this point. Hopefully we don't have to tell the kids that Xmas isn't comming this year! LOL Or maybe it's more like "Tom, you have no RC budget this year." I am guessing it will more likely be the latter.

I was planning on getting my stepson and myself a Slash for Xmas... might have to re-think that. I was hoping to race with him on the new track... if that ever gets built! LOL I will just have to hold out on getting one for myself and just get his for now.


Drive is in the mail. Should arrive in Navato California by 10:30 am by FedEx. That only cost me $72.00! LOL Hopefull I will have some good news in 5 to 7 days once they recieve the drive. At least they are supposed to call me when they recieve the drive so at leas I know when to start the clock!

Alright! You can be my contact person! LOL... I offered to accompany the drive on its journey, but the wife was not going for it. My wife and I have some family out there in the San Fran area. It supposed to be really nice out there.

I hope it all works out too. They seem very confident that they will be able to restore the data in its entirety. Only time will tell I guess. Now we just wait. Good times!

I know kids pictures are a treasured item, even if you don't get the other stuff back I hope you get the pics back.

The pictures are treasured and priceless for sure, but I was just going to tell the kids we were too poor to afford a camera for the first 7 years of their lives!
