Lost the little pin in the dogbone

Sigh !

I keep loosing the little 2cm pin that goes through the end of the dogbone from the center diff to the front diff on my Inferno 7.5.

I'm unable to buy the pins only (don't know the exact name of it) anywhere. I have bought an extra dogbone. It comes with the pins allready, but it is quite expensive to buy a new dogbone each time :bling:

The guy at my LHS says that he has never heard of them falling out. Well he also says alot of other things i won't mention in here.

I cannot elieve that I'm the only one loosing them. What can I use instead. I have tryied normal 3mm screws with the head dremel'ed off and red loctite, but that solution only lasts for about 2 hours of racing. They are too soft and get flattened. The original pins are also slightly thicker than 3mm in one end and seems to be even thicker in the other. (simple eye measurement)

What are you guys using ??

there should be a set screw (locktite the hell out it), I've seen people using heat shrink wrap to hold them in.

Thats odd that you KEEP losing them. I can see one every now and again, but even 2 in a row is odd. I would check the cup that the end goes into and make sure that isnt damaged. If it has lost a chunk, or is wayy off from the way they are supposed to look, it is possible that it may be the cause.

How new is this ride and how often are you losing these pins?

Are the posts/pins falling out? Like do you have a hole left in the end of the dgbone? Do they fall out of both sides or only one? I have an extra set that I just looked at and there doesn't seem to be ANY way that the pin can fall out. It almost looks like mine are welded in place.

I agree with Christian, look at the cups to see if they are mis-aligned or broken in any way. If its only happeneing on one side, compare the cups to the other side that its NOT happeneing to to see if maybe it has been bent out of shape.

usually those pins are pressed fit in. So i dont know how u are losing them

you can buy a steel rod that is the same size as the orginal pin,and cut it to fit. U should be able to get this at your local LHS. It should be held in with allen screw that held in the orginal pin. I too had this problem with my SAvage center rear diff from hot bodies. This is a quick fix to get you back in the game again

Christian: Yes 2 in a row. Completely new Inferno. Cups are fine. The guy gave me new cups. he too could not believe thay fell out either.

robriguez: Yes they fall out and leave a hole in the end of the dogbone. Only the front one on the bone going to the front diff.

Mooky: No allen screw holds it in place. It's pressed in I think.

No guys, this is a DOGBONE. When was the last time you guys saw a hex screw holding the pin tight in a DOGBONE?

Sasquatch - sure sounds unusual. I have those same bones in my 7.5 in the center, and after two years, I have had nothing of the sort happening... and to add to it, your the first person I have heard it happening to. Mighty strange.

See if it happens again. If not, and your cups are looking fine as well, the only thing I can think of would be to drill and tap a hole to put a grub screw in to hold the pin tight... You could make your own pins using the method suggested by Mooky. It'd have to be mighty strong steel rod, and I have never seen it done before myself....

Are you running a new Sports RTR?

And also, I doubt it has much to do with it, but are you running the rubber spacers (or fuel tubing) to limit the forward/backward play of the bones in the outdrives? If not, it might help to try. They should have about 2mm play, no more - but don't make them totally tight either.
