hey i just "dumped" my laptop and put windows media center ed on it and i put all the drivers on. But when i go into control panel and under system it says my two amd athlon 64 proccesors are only running at 799mhz when it use to say 1.7 or 2.7 ghz. it seems to be running fine but i dont know why it says that. any help... i have the dell inspiron 1501 with amd athlon x2.

My guess, being an Intel guy, is that Windows XP sees the 1.7ghz CPU as two 800's (well, it'd be closer to two 850's, but you get the idea). The key reasoning behind that is, that your CPU is a dual core.

If your laptop seems like it is running fine, I wouldn't sweat it.

However, if you're like me and want things in their place properly, you can go to Dell's support site (support.dell.com) and see if there is a patch available for your machine.

Edit; There is a driver for your chipset. Try installing it and see if that does it for you:

I had the same issue and asked HP support about my AMD Turion 64 Processor. From what they said, the processor isn't fully used and will be allocated as needed. I had a CPU tester executable. After using it, I noticed my Laptop procesor speed went from 798MHz to 1.7GHz.

Personally I would not sweat it. If your PC struggles i would.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt that the 'AMD Cool and Quiet driver' ?? It changes the cpu multiplier when no load is present . I know on my Intel based laptop it has a similar function that changes the multiplier from 6 - 9 depending on load .

Pretty much all laptops have speed stepping in order to save on battery. Try re-encoding a video or extracing a zip/rar or pretty much anything that requires a lot of processing power and your speed should go up to full potential by itself. Go to the manufacturers website and see if they have a utility that sets different power profiles. If not, just try plugging in your laptop instead of running off of battery. Try checking this with cpu-z.

hey when i reinstalled the driver i put the chipset driver on it. i remember the last time i did it i never put a driver on it. so i un-installed the driver and it says 1.7 ghz now.

Theres' your issue then... It's a speed-step driver to conserve power.
