Keeping an engine from running so hot

Make sure it's not running too lean.

Make sure you have ventilation through the body.

Make sure your engine is clean.

Other factors depending on what you have and how you run.
 
On top of what wdavidhicks stated:

Make sure you aren't running WOT all the time.

Make sure you are using a decent fuel.
 
Proper ventilation is key... You could also upgrade your cooling head, drop your nitro content or use a colder plug.
 
I cut the tailgate end off the back of my Savage, the hot air does not sit in the body any more. The trick is to get hot air out not cold air in. Refrigeration phys.
 
thanx everyone, I'm going to put a better cooling head on it but what cooler running glow plugs doyou preffer?
 
what if i put 1 or 2 head shimm spacer on my engine whould it cool it down any?
 
The shims wont help temp. wise...More shims, I believe, will cause a performance loss..
 
Correct...too many shims causes the chamber to gain volume which in the end results in less compression and poor combustion. This leads to an more incomplete burn and causes poor performance in the engine.
 
Cold plugs are not really meant to lower temps - although they can. A cold plug just sets the combustion timing later. There are reasons for this being desired but I can not think of them at the moment - major brain fart.
 
Run as rich as you can and still retain the level of performance you must have. The leaner you run, the hotter you run. Air flow is important and on a stadium truck I always cut out the engine side of the windshield and small sections of the side windows (don't get too close to your front windshield cutout or the body will break at the thinnest point), besides the obviouse rear area above the engine. Drilling a few holes across the rear can also allow air to escape and not get traped inside the body.
 
If you run an extra couple shims just use a long plug.

I only run cold/medium plugs in my big blocks now and they all seem to run better that way. Although I always enjoy running my R plugs in my O.S. once in a while. Once in a while.
