Glad you've got that all sorted @AjDale ! That is stress not needed. I did just about the exact same as you with hitting a rock I thought I would clear, but did not. It was in my Mini Cooper too. Luckily, my landlord at the time had a car lift in his garage. We put it on the lift to inspect everything and damage was on the minor side, I got lucky.
Thank you! Definitely a headache. Was an unfortunate event but in the end I think I made out awesome. Being in NY they still use salt on the roads and it rods everything under the car. So having everything replaced is honestly the best thing that could happened. They said it will be in the shop for minimum 10 days. Luckily my dad will let be barrow one of his cars for a bit until mines fixed up!

Daaang! Glad I’m not the only one that has hit a rock… definitely got lucky there was minimal damage! I do wish it was minimal but like I said I may I have made out like a bandit on this one

I had no idea. never done it myself but I've seen how much cats go for, so thought I'd suggest.
sorry bro
No worries! Other states may be different! I do appreciate the suggestion though. Luckily it’s all getting taken care of and getting done the correct way. For $800 to fix the car, I can’t complain to much at all!

Glad you weren't hurt. About 5 years ago we hit a pallet doing 50. Surprisingly no damage. Same truck hit a pack of insulation that cracked a mud gaurd. At that point I got set on trucks due to idiots that shouldn't be hauling items and crappy roads.

Eyes like a hawk if you could see a rock you thought a Mini could safely drive over. 🤪

Haha! Yea...it was one of those (I was in a bad spot to move situations). It was big, thought I could clear it...and not quite.

Happy you didn't get hurt. You might not pay just the $800 though. You might have an insurance surcharge for the next couple years. Just giving you the heads up.

False. If an emissions control device comes on your vehicle, then it must remain there unless you have a waiver, or are otherwise made exempt. In most states-what you are recommending would be a felony, along with a seriously hefty fine..

In my area we have zero emissions testing or inspection ever. Never have and I believe never will.
Thats not to say that can't ticket you for having a modified exhaust if they wanted too... but in this county it doesn't matter directly because they dont test your vehicle.
No cop around here would ever ticket anyone for loud or modified exhaust. Welcome to the country lol.

I've never had emissions testing on a single car in the 24 years I've been driving.

To say "just leave the cat off, it won't hurt" is silly.. unless you do specific things, its gonna throw codes at you.

The upstream oxygen sensor says "hey there is this much" then the downstream says "after the cat there is this much".. if those #'s are the same your cars computer sees the cat as not working and throws codes at you...
Some of these newer cars will hit limp mode over it. Have fun with that jazz.

I’m not stressing the surcharge. I am fully aware they may increase my rate. According to my insurance agent, it’ll probably increase $15-$20 nothing truly noticeable. It actually just dropped $30 so even if they tack that back on I’d still be happier paying the $800 plus the monthly rate increase for however long than paying $9,125 up front. I appreciate it.

Not talking about the increased rate. You're gonna get that even if you go to a different insurance company. But there is also a surcharge they may tack on, on top of that. Its happened to me on a couple occasions.

I’ve been told $800 and that’s it. Nothing more nothing less. I feel that would be mentioned. Either way still beats paying $9,000 out of pocket. Even if I end up paying $1,000 I won’t be upset.

My bill was 9k too. They added a 3 year 3k surcharge. I'm not saying you're wrong. Just giving you the heads up so you're not surprised. I didn’t know about it till the policy renewal. I changed company's and didn’t worry about it after that.

It happened when I had to go to the insurance company for my house too. But the surcharge wasn't that bad. The bill on that one was around 40k.

No doubt, well I’ll keep it in mind. I’ve gone over my insurance policy a few times now and I have no surcharge on it. Although like you said it could activate during the new policy renewal but only time will tell for that. If I need to switch insurance companies so be it. But I’m not gonna stress it until the time comes.

No doubt, that’s rough! Hopefully it was all good in the end.

@AjDale You know this could have all been avoided if you just drove a big raised up 4x4! 🤣

I'm glad that's not all out of pocket, that would have been an ouch! I am glad it wasn't worse and nobody was hurt. :thumbs-up:

Ok, explain.
So you're saying after a 9k claim, you essentially had to pay it back over 3 years?
Tell us which co. so I'll be sure to never give them my business!

What company?
I don't think its a company thing since it happened with two different companies years apart. My homeowners insurance did the same but not as crazy and easily 10 years after the car incident. So it might be a state thing like @Lostinthewoods86 said.

UPDATE**
Dropped my car off at the dealership on November 10th. It is still currently being worked on. I called yesterday for an update and they said my bumper just got finished being painted and they’re still working on my rear suspension.
Really hoping it’s done within the next week.

On the bright side, my boss let me borrow a company truck for the time being so I still have wheels to get anywhere I need.
