Was at the track last night, and came out to a couple of cars that had gotten egged including mine. This is at 145am. After the police report and everything was taken care of I headed home which is a 45min drive. I got about 10mins away from home and noticed a rock in the road (must’ve fallen off the hillside near the road) it was a very bendy road with blind corners so in my head it was right to avoid crossing the yellow line into the other lane. I decided to straddle this rock not realizing how big it actually was and let me say it may as well have been a boulder. After hitting it, I pulled over to inspect the damage. From what I could tell I had a cracked bumper, and it ripped part of my heat shield off to where it was almost dragging. Made it home, got up and called the mechanic to remove the rest of the heat shield and give it a quick look over. We found that it hit my exhaust and crushed my pipe just before the catalytic converter and some good size dents just after it. Also bent a bracket pretty badly that holds my fuel lines and brake line. The back half of the exhaust look fine. The shop quoted me about $2800 to repair just the exhaust portion.

I decided that’s just not in the budget to come out of pocket at the moment and unfortunately had to file an insurance claim. Luckily the phone call went smooth and everything seems to be going to get taken care of. They will be sending an appraiser out this week and have lined up a dealership to call me and get an appointment set up.

Very long night after a great day is a real kick in the a$$ but I guess that’s the way things goes sometimes.

Dang, that really sucks... still, it could have been worse!
Does suck! Definitely could’ve been worse. Thankfully I’ve got full coverage and everything should be all good again soon. I just hope it goes as smooth as the phone call with the agent did.

On another note, one of the guys at the track got the license plate number of the people that egged our vehicles. So that’s a positive as well.

Just glad you didn't hit the rock at high speed and lose control.

I recall a decade or 3 back, a van on route 128 in Woburn did similar. Over a tire left in the road.
The front cleared, the rear did not.
The van left the road at high speed.
The driver did not survive.

You were very lucky to have not taken out your oil or trans pan.
Than could have lubed your tires WHILE blowing expensive parts! Good times! 🤕

I'm glad you are ok! 👍😎😁

I do believe that has happened on several occurrences now. Definitely scary stuff. My front did not clear but luckily the rear did.

That wasn’t even a thought until my brother mentioned it. Super glad I didn’t bust up more than I did. Although it’ll be expensive as it is, it could’ve been much much more expensive.

I appreciate it!

UPDATE**

Got my car to the dealership, the estimator said it would be fairly quick (30mins). After about 2 hours they finally called me back to come take a look under the car. He pointed out all the damage and let’s say there’s A LOT. Approximately $9,125.46. So thankful I filed the insurance claim and just have to pay the deductible.

Here’s my quote

That sucks, man.
PS, you do not need a CAT on your car for it to work. All it does is reduce noise/emissions. Some cars don't even have one! If your situation is tight, you can always leave it off for a little while

False. If an emissions control device comes on your vehicle, then it must remain there unless you have a waiver, or are otherwise made exempt. In most states-what you are recommending would be a felony, along with a seriously hefty fine..

Does suck, but I’m not stressing it. Like I said, I filed an insurance claim so it’s all covered. I pay my $800 deductible and everything is done. I’m honestly excited as I’ll essentially have a like new car when it’s all done lol! However in NYS we need CATS. I also wouldn't have a loud car that’s just not my style

Its nice to hear it worked out. I forgot that Ohio is one of the only states that has optional cats (after signing a waiver and having your car inspected).

I am a car guy (1/1 scale) and on my Miata I have a rather loud exhaust and no CAT.

Additionally, if they used a new cat to repair your car, you can sell the old one (if you still have it) for a substantial amount. (some are worth upwards of 500$! like the one on some FJ cruisers.)

You’re not allowed to purchase used CATS in NYS let alone sell them. I’ve already been through that. Also on top of it buying used, you never know what you’re actually going to get.

This is also a felony in most states if you do not have a license to do so..

I had no idea. never done it myself but I've seen how much cats go for, so thought I'd suggest.
sorry bro

Glad you've got that all sorted @AjDale ! That is stress not needed. I did just about the exact same as you with hitting a rock I thought I would clear, but did not. It was in my Mini Cooper too. Luckily, my landlord at the time had a car lift in his garage. We put it on the lift to inspect everything and damage was on the minor side, I got lucky.
