is this everything i'd need to run/tune either a revo or savage 25?

how are the Hitec 645MG servo's? saw these recommended on hpi forum by hpi staff. ebay $38ea (brand new with all parts in box) need 2 of these or one of these and one less powerful one? this would leave about $40-$50 for controller.

they're pretty nice. i have one in my bugg for steering. very powerful, but have problems centering :hammer:

Here is what i'm going with so far:

Will the TF-4 that comes with the Savage 25 RTR have any trouble controlling the more powerfull servo's?

-Savage SS Truck
-Hi-Tec 5645MG Steering Servo (Ultra high-torque)
-Hi-Tec 625MG Throttle/brake Servo
-Servo saver??? (what is a good one)
-Mc-Coy MC-8 glow plug (back-up)
-Radio Controller 3 channel (TF-4 off ebay if I can’t find/afford a decent one)
-Duratrax Infared Temp Guage (for tuning in around 240F)
-Duratrax 250cc fuel bottle
-Hobbico after run oil 2oz
-Duratrax Fuel 20% 3 quarts (enough for break in - some winter fun)
-Glow plug ignitor
-Dubro In-line fuel filter – blue
-Duratrax air filter oil
-12NiMH rechargable batteries for remote control (8) and reciever (4)

If you are getting the savage ss you will need an engine also. If your on a budget I would go with an rtr either the revo or the savage 25 rtr. I personally would go with the revo because if you plan on racing the revo has a better reputation. The savage is more of a basher. Just remember about the engine and that will cost over $100.

From towerhobbies.com

INCLUDES: One HPI Savage SS Monster Truck kit with oil shocks, .25 engine,
clear body, decals, tires, foam inserts, 5-spoke chrome wheels
15 & 18 tooth clutch bell, 49 tooth spur gear, instructions

so this kit includes the .25 engine with pull-start not roto start. bashing is what i'll be doing 90% of the time, so i'm gonna stick with the Savage. The revo looks wicked fun as well though.

Motor Saver air filter is a must, the
stock filter is junk.
I use Mc Coy 9 plugs and they work very well.
After run oil is nothing more than automatic transmision fluid so if you want to save yourself some money try using Marvels Mystery oil I have been using it for years in my boats and it's only a couple dollars for a large bottle you get a lot more for a lot less .
I buy it at Walmart.
Hitec 645 metal gear is a great servo , stock for throtle and brake is fine.

Hope this helps

Dont think it comes with a "stock" servo. As for afterrun oil I use WD-40

The Savage SS doesn't come w/ stock servo, but 'stock servo' probably meant, the standard one that comes w/ the controller. If you got a little extra to burn, Its always a good idea to buy the better servo. I got the Airtronics 358 in my savage. Doesn't have any problem at all turning the wheels, does the job, and does it quick, but very expencive. When/if it strips gears out, its like $3 to rebuild the plastic gear to get it runnin again.

As far as the steering servo saver, from what I heard John Sholtz (I think his name is?) supposedly just doubles up on the metal C-Clips to strengthen up the stock servo saver. I haven't tried it yet, but I may see how it works first. I've been told that you get that piece, along with the plastic tree containing the steering components. Nice to have backups of extra poop, and shouldn't cost much. Also, it'd add just a tiny bit of weight, as oppose to getting a differnet servo saver, changing the setup. (Golden Horizons? About $40?).

Good Luck with your savage!

jeff, you dont want to do that. Use Marvel Mystery oil.

i think we all need to step back a minute and re-evaluate what some people are recommending. it seems to me a lot of people are trying to hop up this guys truck already when its obvious he is on a budget.

start off with this
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGWY8&P=7
it includes most things you will need to get you started
then your truck
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFCB0&P=0
radio, a personal favorite of mine, and the one in this link comes with a high torque servo for your steering
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGAG3**&P=0
a second servo for your throttle, buy 2 if you want to get your reverse module now too.
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXH288&P=0
and dont forget paint, i like Pactra spray cans
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0093p?&C=RHF

as you break things or find you want better perfomance, then hop back on here and we will be glad to help. but these are the only things that are REALLY nessessary to get you started.

if you want rechargable batteries in your transmitter thats fine, but dont put them in the truck, you will actually be hurting its performance by lowering its radio system voltage. use either 4 alkaline batteries, or get a 5 cell rechargable pack.

i've found a revo for $405 brand new from rcboyz so i'm going with the revo now (just paid for it). i did buy some extra suspension parts so i had them on hand when things get crazy. front upper and lower arms, rear upper and lower arms, pushrods, shock mounts, rod ends, 2 extra glow plugs.

I figured that while kickass servo's would be nice, gotta remember i've never driven one better so its not like i would really notice it within the first little while. As time passes the revo will have mad hop-up kits, so i'll be able to hopefully get lots of aluminum into the suspension area.

$405 for the revo mad it a steal compared to the $319 SS which needs $150 in parts to be an RTR. For my first truck, i think the revo will be amazing, once i'm more comfortable, i plan on adding/toying more.

oh, one more question. i know i need a 7.2V nicd battery/charger for the revo EZ start, but what is better in the radio controller AA Alkaline or AA NiMH? The NiMH will put out 4600mah with 8 of them. both are rechargable.

you will want nimh in your radio. the MAH of a battery does not increase like voltage does. if you buy 8 2100mah AA's which are 1.2V. your radio will operate at 9.6V with a 2100mah capacity. mah is like a battery's "fuel tank" its how much energy it holds. also alkaline are not rechargable, if thats what you meant in your post.

you could have also gone shopping for a savage 25, its RTR just like the revo. i never was sure why you kept looking at the SS  I'm sure you will be happy with your revo though. order up a set of heavy duty rod ends for it though. lots have people have broken the ball ends on the shocks of that truck. check out the revo thread for recommended upgrades.

you will find there are things with every car on the market that need changed or upgraded, no car is perfect. the savage guys i think overwhelmed you with things that are recommended to be done. you will find the same thing with the revo. there are just some things that have to be done to make every car more durable and/or perform better.

hey, I've seen some ppl say that the 4 AA's will do good for now, they are right, only to a certain extent. I've ran AA's in my tmaxx before i sold it, i quickly moved on to a Venom NIMH pack, because it got to the point where after 5 runs, and that does indeed get pricey, especially on my teenage budget, i mean i even tried lithium AA's too, doesn't work, maybe an extra run. but my car would go dead after 6 max tanks. big trucks need alot of juice. get a NIMH pack if you can for your savage. it will save you from later headaches and broken parts from runaways. just MO. later

The use of WD 40 on it's own
is useless because it evaporates and leaves your engine unprotected.
I use WD 40 only to wash out the remaining nitro then I blow it out and after that I use Marvels Mystery oil .
I have been washing out my very expensive Italian marine engines for years with this method and it works great , I am also using it with my Savage with the same results.
It is very important to protect your bearings as best you can because that is were most of the trouble comes from with theese engines and cleaning it out properly after you run it will help to extend your motors life and reduce headaches.

so can i get a battery pack instead of 8xAA batteries with NIMH that i could charge that fits in the radio controller or is it only 8xAA whether alkaline or NiMH.

also yes, i have order shock rebuild kits, rods, upp/low control arms front and rear...all just in case. they were cheap like $3-5 ea so its cheap insurance so i can continue to run if i bust something up.

I'm talking about the ballcup on the shock itself, there are upgraded ones made by DuBro i belive.

some radio's you can get a 8 cell battery pack for(i dont think its available for stock traxxas radios). but 8 individual AA's do the same thing. its what i use in all my radios.

The Revo is a very good choice. Yeah,I wasn't sure why you were looking at the SS kit on a budget, usually with kits like that it gets expensive quick b/c you dont want to "skimp" on anything.

Not to get into a "this is the best brand of fuel" war,but what kind of fuel do you plan on running, and at what nitro %? Traxxas says to use Top Fuel, but I know a LOT of people who don't,I didn't in my Rustler. I found Trinity Monster HP 20-25% worked great, and kept temps down. I wont say don't go with Top Fuel(I have NEVER used it) just saying what other have said here, there, and even on the Traxxas message board.

And as for just using WD-40 as my only means of after run....DOHHH :hammer: Live and learn....... Have to go to Walmart and pick up the MM oil

Yeah, the price of the SS kept adding up cause i didn't want cheap this and cheap that...but then i was like wait a minute...its not exactly like i'll be able to tell since i'm new, etc.

So the REVO just seemed like a great RTR truck that is still tough, although not as tough as the Savage.

As for fuel, no i'm not using Top Fuel, had no intention on it. I'm looking at Trinity monster horsepower 20% (20 is what i'm gonna go with) and getting 3-4 litres since no-one seems to sell 1 gallon jugs.

i'l gonna go with the 8xAA NiMH batteries for the remote and order the fuel type accessories right now from tower
as the car is from rcboys.

can you be more specific, link?

on the shock shaft there is a ball cup, I've heard about problems with it failing. I'm not a revo owner so i can't tell you any more than that.
