Hi all,

I am looking to purchase an R/C truck for my 10 year old son, but I want to get one that will last / grow with him, durable, etc. I am debating whether I should get him an electric one or nitro, but I am not familiar enough with nitro R/C to know if he is too young for it still. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bryan

I would probably start with electric just for the ease of use and maintenance if he gets further into the hobby then look at nitro
Thats how I started when I was about 7 and I bought my first nitro when I was 25 and now I have many nitro and electric rigs

Any thoughts on what would be a good option for an electric truck that is durable and can be modified?

I'm a nitro fan but I would say go with electric for a young child. One of the Traxxas cars would be a good start, pretty tuff, they go fast (depending on model) & most have plenty of spare parts & hop ups if you want to make them look better, go faster & make them stronger. Some may be a bit to quick for a 10yr old, check out what models they have, they also show the speed the models can reach as a guide.

Idk what exactly u want but I love my 1/16 traxxas summit. Its 4x4. Brushless. And small enought that I can play with inside the house. It dont seem to bad in grass either. Its a fun little rig. And the brushed virsion can be bought fairly cheap.

I'm a nitro guy but if I was going to start my son on something, I would buy an electric. I would teach him nitro but let him choose which he wanted.

P.S I don't know if RC planet are a good store to buy from i never have but it was just a site to give you an idea

Ya I ment to put summit or merv. Just dont get the on road car. Its cool and all but personaly I didnt like it. But if u decide to got 1/16 summit / merv all the 1/16 platforms are the same with a little chance in parts you can have the summit, merv, ken block, boss 302, or slash. But imo I thing the summit or merv r great. Good ground clearance. Not as much as a 1/10 but you get what I mean.

I have a 5 year old son has a 2.5 tmaxx with ez start he starts it by himself and loves that thing he jumps hella good to its just how much time u want to sPend with him that's our hobby as a family so I like nitro and I bet he would love the sound of Niro to

I would recommend the Traxxas Stampede or Rustler as a first rc. They are both durable anx upgradable with great parts availability.

bought my 5 yr old a 1/10 eletric 4x4 off of nitrorcx.com cost $120 shipped to the house .it has an adj.speed control so i turned it down to run bout 10 mph. they will run bout 20 mph wide open but the onlything is with electric the batt. only last a few mins.and that is anoying.i agree with3.3maxx.thats why i only bought my boy the cheap rc @ first.and yes he watched me turn his truck up a lil 1 day when we went out to run our rc's and the next week i came home from work and my wife says "he knows how to turn his truck up now"said he turned it up run the heck out of it then before he brought it in he turned it back down.so x-mas i will be getting him the nitro stampede 1.5

if you do go with nitro it would be best to be with him and supervise heck buy 2 nitros and that would make it more fun for you both

My take on it is go with whatever you want. Your kid(s) will pick up nitro or electric with ease....kids learn everything with ease it seems like. The main thing I would be concerned with is maintenance. Your child most likely will not be responsible enough at 10 to make sure its cleaned and maintainanced properly so you'll get stuck doing it or forcing him to do it so make sure your up to the task. Nitro needs alot more cleaning than electric so Id consider that. If your not an experienced nitro guy and your not looking to be, you just want something your son can get into as a hobby then Id look at electrics as it will be less stuff for you to maintain. Just my .02 worth

Is Nitro right for me?

Ask your doctor if nitro is right for you.

Side effects may include an addiction to the smell of burning nitro in the morning, fever, headaches, vomiting, smiling, cheering, wrenching and occasional bouts of depression after wrecking.
It's been found to be beneficial to most people, so use it accordingly.

Hi Rolex,
Which of those are more common, should I ever crash my much anticipated TRex 700 E DFC HV 3GX 2.1?

Just curious...

But yeah, RC models are also, a whole lot of fun...

I got my 8 year old an Electrix Ruckus for his birthday, he love the thing, he's put about 12 battery packs through it in the week since he got it & it hasn't missed a beat.
Plenty quick/fast enough for a beginner, does donuts & sprays gravel around well enough to appease the young hooligan, handles pretty good for a basic 2wd truck too.
He's flipped it, barrel rolled it, crashed into trees & rocks etc & it just shruggs it all off - I'm pretty impressed with it for a beginner car.
