Well, I have a laptop that the back light went out on.
So I get a "grade A" used LCD (the whole top) off flea bay for $116 shipped.
I installed the new top and nothing but a stretched, distorted image with thousands of lines, and a 3 inch black line down the middle. I'm going to make the assumption that the guy is away for the holiday weekend, because I can't reach him VIA email.
I'm not worried about that poop yet anyway.

Here's my question: I can see an image on my screen even with the light out if I use a flashlight. So I know it's just the light. I works fine if I hook it up to an external monitor as well.

How do I get the back light out of the poopy screen so I can put it in mine?

(if the guy from ebay burns me of course)

I don't want to wait 3 months to have this resolved from PP and ebay (it's my sons and school starts Thursday).
I'll fix it myself and report the poop out of this guy and poop on his feedback.

its is more then likley only the inverter that is bad. the lights normaly dont go out (there cold cathod light tubes, simular to mini neon bulbs) snap a pic or three of the screen and if I've worked on one befor i can walk you through it. its not hard you just have to go slow because sometimes they hide the screws.

the inverter is just a board with 2 plugs that plug into it and one maby two screws that hold it down.

also what is the make and model?? i can give you a call if it will help.

you should be able to change the inverter with no problems, I'm asuming the "new" screen lights up ok?

It's an HP omni book xe3.

If the inverter was bad, would I still see an image with a flash light? Would it still work an external monitor?

Is the inverter in the bottom under the keys, or in the screen?

if the inverter is bad, just the backlight will not work. those screens are simular to a projector. they have the color section with the picture and a backlight. if the backlight doesn't work then you can still see the color.

and the external monitor showing is completly seperate from the screen so yea that would work as well.

the inverter should be in the screen, all the ones I've delt with have been.

let me look up the machine, can you get some pics of the screen? screen side, back side, and the edges would help.

he sent you the whole screen right? plastic and all? not just the lcd.

If a dink like beason can figure one out, surely you can too. It's an easy part to change.

that link looks promising, thanks olds. you should be set ratzo, its not a hard switch. keep us informed if you have any problems.

Thanks guys. I'll update you all tonight.

OK. I swapped inverters and the screen lit up like a Hanuka bush on Christmas.
The only problem is that it was flickering so I shut it down.

I'm going to send it back to the guy (at his request, and get me $$ back).

At least you know what your problem is now. You can probably write down a part number and just order that.

those inverters can be very hard to find, i would double check all your connections befor sending it back, see if you can make it stop flickering. at least you know what the problem is though.. maby do a google for the numbers on the inverter, see if anyone has them in stock.
