Can the ground for the ez start be anywhere on the chassis or does the ground have to be somewhere touching the block/engine mount?

I'm just making sure before I get out into the field and have to mess with it. What's the worse that could happen? Glow plug does nothing?

I believe the yellow wire is just a redundant ground any way.the black wire is the ground that is actually used. The yellow wire just provides an alternate path for current flow in the event the red and black wires get shorted. Also being that the engine/block touches the chassis then you can mount the ground onto ANY conductive material that is touching the chasis.

And as far as whats the WORST that could happen.... I guess your could burn up your starter motor or a glow plug, but that would require a shorted wire AND you holding that little red button down for an excessive amount of time. Chances of that are slim to none so I wouldn't worry about it.
And I guess if I am wrong about the yellow wire just being a protective/redundant ground ( never tried to run it with it disconnected but I assume it would still turn the motor over seeing as the red and black wires alone are a complete circuit) then in that case , you would be right NOTHING would happen.
So pretty much moral of the story is you can mount it on any metal that is touching the chasis and you will be fine. If by chance you "forgot" to mount it... Chances are you still wouldn't harm anything.
Hopefully I didn't ramble too much and that is of some help.

The red & black are for the EZ start motor, that's it, the blue & yellow are for the glow plug. If you do mount the yellow wire somewhere else, I'd recommend scraping that spot down to bare metal, as well as under the engine mount. This will make sure it gets good contact. If it was really my truck though, I'd ditch the EZ start and go with a pull, or at least ditch the yellow/blue and get an ignitor.

ditch both the Blue and Yellow wires and go with a glow plug igniter. you will never have to worry about the ground wires again, and it will save the battery in your ez start wand !

a pull and igniter you'll have to carry less! wand doesn't fit into your jeans pocket.
or you could get a losi R.O.S.S and wire it into the reciever. that means you can remotely fire up the engine via radio.

It won't exactly be one less thing to carry, I clip the ez start onto my pocket. I pretty much forget about it unless I have to start the pede up over and over. I like the thought of the ross system but it's not for my maxx. I don't want the added weight of another Rx pack + electronics and it uses the 3rd channel on the Rx so no reverse, which I want to keep. But I am certainly considering it for my pede, for now the maxx is priority though.

It's not that bad of an idea to buy a igniter to save on the wand battery... Who makes a good igniter?

I like my Hobbico Hot-Shot 2, it came with an old used Rustler that had been sitting for a few years. I thought it looked old and crappy, so I never used it, I decided to give it a shot and it has been my main ignitor since. They also have a Super Hot-Shot 2, it has a 5000mah battery.

Using an external ignitor tends to fire the engine better anyway. Ever since traxxas released the ez start and I had problems getting a truck started I stopped using them. Still good for cranking it over tho.

I have an old Orange dubro one that has been through hell and back ,Still works fine just doesn't hold a charge too long anymore, must be 15 years old

I use the hobbico hot shot 2 rechargeable glow igniter. Works great for me. Here's a link for one with charger for 19.99 free shipping. I found mine at the LHS for same price.

+1 on the pull start as well. It all stated by getting rid of the blue wire and using the igniter for me as well. Before I knew it I removed the EZ start all together and went pull start. Now the only time I use the EZ start is maybe to break in the engine but after that it starts in one or two pulls....:-)
