Hi guys new to the forum, dont know if this is the right section, i opened up the diff on my 1/8th nitro truggy(its a chinese import wind hobby) i know its not the best out there, but its just for a bit of fun then I'm moving on again(i usually keep cars for a few months then get bored lol), ok back to my q, the grease in the diff feels like glue and is very hard to turn the wheels(my other cars were never like this), is that normal, and if not what grease can i replace it with?

Typically most diffs use silicone oil of a heavy weitght like 10-100k. If your diff is not sealed then you may have to stick with grease sadly. But the good news is pretty much any grease will work but personally I would go with as heavy as I could find. That is just me though.

Regular auto wheel bearing grease will do just fine. (or as Frickenjoey said, whatever you have). Before you pack it, take it apart and use some solvent (my solvent is usually gasoline or carb cleaner) and get all of the old grease out of there.

I've been at the track and needed to rebuild a blown diff between races but didnt have any grease with me. I went to 7-11 and they had Crisco. While not the best of lubes it did last the entire balance of the race day. brought it home, cleaned it and repacked with normal automotive grease. In a tight spot you "run what cha brung"!!!

Phils.... buddy....um.... I would rather if you did not tell me about packing the diff in your RearEnd with Crisco. It is just a visual I don't need. You ran it all day like that.....disturbing....just saying :hehe:

If I'm gonna use grease instead of diff oil I use this stuff. Its smooth as butter.
