I know i will probably get some flac for this, but i think it has to be said.

The practice of thread derailing is getting a bit excessive IMO and i think in the log run it will hurt the site.

I enjoy joking around and horseplay just as much as the next guy, but lately alot of threads have been destroyed that shouldnt have been. We all pride ourselves on this site in the fact that there is TONS of info documented in the archives. But if i was an new RC addict and came here, i would not want to wade through all the crap in order to get to the info i am looking for and would give up and move on. If you picked up a dictionary to look up a new word and had to flip through 5 pages of the national enquirer just to find the answer, you would go find a different dictionary.

I spend alot of time at my job searching the web for different solutions to the various degrees of destruction my users inflict on there computers, and more often then not i end up finding the solution on some forum. Just like a new RC hobbiest searching for info on a problem they may have. If I'm reading along looking for a fix to some weird issue for hours, and i hit what looks like the perfect documentation, then i see pages and pages of non related info, i will hit the back button and move on. When i am looking for an answer i want the answer, not a bunch of unrelated junk to sift through.

some threads are ment to be derailed and it is a riot seeing it crash and burn in all its glory, but when the user still hasnt gotten there question answered and people jump in with crap, it has to be annoing to the thread starter. Even when the question has been answered, if someone comes along a month later with the same issue and stumbles upon the thread with the answer. they have to waid through 5 pages of ass grabbing before they can fix there stuff. I for one would be turned off by it and go somewhere else.

Someone once posted that once the question was answered the thread was free game, but the next person that comes along and uses the search function to find that thread would be bombarded with pages of junk just to fix the issue. We tell users "the search is your friend" but when they can't find an answer because of 5 pages of junk covering it up its kind of pointless.

When the question hasnt even been answered or the user comes back saying what we suggested didnt work, and the thread has went to hell its hard to get back to there issue and help them. I for one am here first and foremost to help our fellow hobbiest, and hate to see the real issues fall through the cracks because everyone is filling it up with junk.

just an example is lessens thread on his PC. Sure its not RC related, but where all here to help wherever we can. His issue is still unfixed yet there is a page or so of stuff covering up the info i am trying to relay to him

I may be way off base, and I'm not trying to single out anyone, as i have participated in a few derails myself, but i think its getting rather rediculous.

[/rant]

if i come off harsh I'm not trying to be, I'm just a blunt person, and that is the only way i know to relay my thoughts.

You are welcome to your opinion and as such I will leave you and your thread alone. I will be on the short bus with my idiot friends *er* pals...

to be honest man i 100% agree!!!! if it gets derailed after awhile then thats cool but all of this 3rd post derailing gets annoying.....imo

Your point is well taken, Beason.
Sorry about Lessen's PC thread, but you're right. If you notice, though, most of the bantering takes place after the info. If someone is searching for that info, they'll find it, and then move on. They don't even have to read any more posts.
If you noticed, even MY thread dealing with the car problem wandered away, but I already had some VERY accurate information that I've copied and pasted from it.
Through the derailing, there have already been a couple of posts that have 'disappeared', since rather than poke fun, they were more of a challenge in calling someone out, and I remove them to avoid even the slightest confrontation.
It's the dead of winter, most places are freezing or snowing, and every year there are knock down, drag out brawls because we're all a little stir crazy.
I choose to go along with the fun since we all get to share some laughs instead of looking for trouble. Christmas is close, and then we'll have our hands full of newbies with new toys in less than a week. Get ready for it.

EDIT: It's NOT fair game. Not every thread is a target, and that won't happen.

LMAO..GREAT THREAD!!!

I love these threads!!!

Seriously, use the ignore button and report it bro. No sense in letting it get to you this far. Noobs are among us every year.

I agree. But I have to say AFTER the thread gets derailed I do join in the fun. not pointing any fingers but there are 3 main people on here that are the main de-railers.

I'm not a chicken, i don't wanna argue with them. But if Rolex and RC Addict and Alpinehyperlite are cool with it, I will release the names.

I wasn't calling you a chicken. It was an abstract thought which was a reference to the movie "Young Guns".

Besides... it appears you have sealed your fate!

Rolex and RC Addict and Alpinehyperlite

You know at least one of those guys is licensed to actually carry and USE a firearm... right?

Are you talking about ED's

Who is this Ed of which you speak? And what does that have to do with a rooster?

Pony Ride perhaps?

He frequents here rarely and has been known to wear briight pants and smells of burnt flesh.

I could not agree more with every word you said. I agree it has gotten pretty far out of hand (especially in the past couple months.) and It gets real old real fast.
If you notice you will even see people that act like they are proud of their derailments, but really guys it's getting old.
I even agree with the poking jokes at each other sometimes, but when it gets to the point that the original thread topic has crashed and burned it's way overdoing it!

Even in a thread with concerns about derailing you guys have to derail it, make a mess of it. It's really not funny, I have seen some great threads and good discussions ruined by a few guys that feel they need to derail every single thread. Beason, I agree with you 100% it has gotten totally out of hand.

You guys want to play with each other go do it in ffa.

I've noticed the increase also. I think it's a fine line between being 'too much' and yet providing a good chuckle at the same time.
Honestly if every thread stayed on topic, it would be kinda boring, but I do understand what Beason is saying about how it could possibly be frustrating for a newbie.

Beason,

I just want to let you know you're not alone in this thinking and I've mentioned this to the crew. As I've told the staff I've seen an increase in this as well and was about to say something this morning, after seeing this thread it just makes my point more valid and one that can't be ignored.

Supporting Members forums and the RCNT Lounge forums are all fun and games and I don't even count them as threads being derailed or not. My main concern is one that we both share in the fact I fear members and visitors both are being turned off by all the "joking" or finding it more difficult to get their information that they are looking for.

Dont get me wrong guys I by no means want to make the site strict and following a straight line. I enjoy the joking and having fun but there is a very light gray line that's hard to see called the happy medium. We need to find that again, when it gets to the point where a number of members are starting to see it as an issue, then it's a given that we've crossed that line for sure.

No one is asking for the joking and having fun to stop - that isn't what we're about, RCNT has always been and will be a laid back forum, we just need to make sure people are not having a hard time finding the information or answers they are looking for w/o having to sort though pages of completely unrelated and unhelpful content.

Everyone's help in this is much appreciated!
