Hey guys, for some reason dllhost.exe is using over 80% of my cpu. It bogs everything down so much I can barely do anything. Any ideas why it is doing this? Or how I can fix it?

It depends on several factors.

If there are several instances of the .dll running in your task manager only ONE of them is real- the others are spyware and must be removed. Likely in that case a spyware search will not produce results.

Being as the file is not a .dll but an .exe it has to be associated with a program that is running at that particular moment. Open your task manager and see what exactly you have running.

I have never seen a file present itself as that name and that leads me to believe some intelligent person made it that way so the less computer-knowledgeable people would simply believe that the file was a required system file and must be left alone. If you are feeling brave, just kill it in task manager and see if there are adverse effects of doing so.

Thats what I did tweak. I opened task manager and ended the process. The computer is running 250% better now. I haven't the slightest idea how to find out what was causing the problem, but for now its working fine.

Again- if you open the task manager and this file has manifested itself more than once, IT IS A VIRUS. It may not seem like much to some- but these type of self-replicating files can and will cripple/disable your computer. the site linked above is a really good resource.

Chances are guys if you ever have an error pop-up, Copy the error text word for word and google it. 9 times out of 10 the search query will take you directly to an establish site (not a search results page) with pretty good instructions on how to remove/repair the error.

As for the file on your computer man.. I really have no idea. It very well may be something Microsoft installed to help your browsing or it may be associated with a hot-fix. Other than some extensive searching you are pretty much out of luck on finding out exactly what it's tied too. www.download.com has some nice windows "tweaking programs" that can, in most cases really help your computer.

You can also go to WWW.AnswersThatWork.com. An excellent site for finding out what anything in your computer does, and if you can safely remove it, or set it for 'manual'. If you have XP, and are running Norton System, turn off 'Speed Disk'. This will run at any time, and will take about 85% of your comp's resources. It's only purpose is to check your hard drive for fragmentation at the most inoperatune times.
When you want to defrag using Norton, just turn it back on, and after defrag, turn it off again.
