looking into getting a low battery monitor for an older esc I'm going to use a lipo on, someone please explain hookup and usage, or have a good link please

Buy one of THESE guys, set it for the voltage you want it to alarm at, and then plug your lipos balance lead in to it and run until you hear the alarm go off. You will want to secure the alarm in the rig with velcro or soemthing.

The balance cable plugs in the same as it does on your charger. Offset to the same side.
