What's up everyone. After a long while... I couldn't help but return to my childhood hobby. I've been looking for an excuse to get back into RC racing and I finally got it out of the way and impulse purchased a Tekno ET48 2.2 Truggy and a Flysky Noble NB4+ transmitter with FGR4S Receiver. I used to race a modified 1/10 scale stadium truck like 20+ years ago (as a child😅) at my local tracks and I always admired the buggy/truggy racers...so naturally I waited a couple of decades to finally pick one up.

Anyways, since I've been out of the game for quite a while and I impulse purchased the truggy and transmitter/receiver...I just assumed I had everything I needed and completely forgot that it's not all-inclusive and there are still more parts that are needed. So that brought me here, so I could consult with others that are more knowledgeable about all of this stuff.

So I need suggestions for the following equipment:
  • ESC and motor
  • Steering servo
  • Battery
  • Tires (4 different scenarios[Grass, Concrete, Dirt, Sand])
  • MOD1 pinion
  • Paint (I always enjoyed doing my own custom paint job)
Any suggestions on equipment or anything in general would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to RCT! Sounds like you have quite the budget! I'm not too sure on electronics as I don't race, but @WickedFog would most likely recommend tekin, and they are very high quality! @Greywolf74 is your guy for batteries! And of course, our resident tekno ENTHUSIAST, @Littlemotor ! Those guys should be in here shortly to help u out!

Welcome brothaman!! First things first-what’s your budget, and exact intentions with the truck? You racing competitively, running on backyard tracks, bashing a bit just for fun, or a little of everything?

You managed to pick a super solid platform, and we can definitely steer you in the right direction! Definitely a good thing you’ve got some history for sure! 🤘

Also-this is a PAIR of 2.0’s (with one being the nitro truck) and technically a RE-build on each, but I have a TON of solid info, and a riDONKulous amount of detailed photos to go along with.. They are almost identical to the 2.2 you have picked up, and I’d recommend almost verbatim what I run as far as your list in your OP is concerned. 😉 I’ve been running Tekin electronics since the mid to late ‘80’s, so there’s a lot of experience, and thought behind what I recommend. I’m happy to share my experiences as well.

ESC- Tekin RX8 Gen 3
Motor- Tekin T8 Gen 3 Truggy 2000kV
Programmer- Tekin Hotwire 3.0 Bluetooth

Servo- NitroPro FK-N500Pro2
Servo Horn- Tekno Aluminum Clamping 25T

BatterIES- NitroPro 4S 14.8V LiPo 6500mAh

Wheels/Tires- Will discuss.

Pinion- Tekno/Will discuss.

Paint- Will discuss.

CHARGER- Will discuss.

There are some items I would atrongly recommend for the Kit as far as upgrades, such as Titanium turnbuckles, steering rack bushings, sway bar collars, Titanium skid plates, etc..

You will also need proper 12awg, ultra high strand count, silicone jacketed wire, bullet connectors, a good balance charger, some specialty tools, etc..

Wheels and tires will require some further discussion FOR SURE.

The CHEAPEST route on paint is some good ol’ Tamiya rattle cans, and a single color, or a bottle of liquid mask, and the multi-color scheme of your choice. IF you have an airbrush (you mentioned messing with custom paint work), then this will get a lot easier for sure.

I mean...I'm already $800-$900 in the hole. I think my budget could be described as... Sunk-cost fallacy at this point 🤣 But for real, I'm willing to pay for whatever is best...within reason. I'm not looking to be some pro racer or anything, so if the choice was between a motor that is $300 and is amazing but to be a pro I needed a $1000 motor to see 1% returns...that's where I would draw the line. I'm willing to spend a bit, but within reason. Should have seen my wife's reaction when the Truggy arrived, and I realized I still needed a motor, ESC, battery, tires, servo, pinion etc. Her immediate reaction was ...so you're returning it, right? 🤣 Now that it's sunk in, she just laughs at me for my naivety.

As for what I'm going to primarily use it for. It'll mainly be a suburban Sunday driver (until I can find a local track). So I'll be driving it in the grass, concrete road/sidewalk/parking lot, and eventually a dirt track. I'd also like to take it with me to the beach when I go on vacation...so I'd like to rip it up and down the sand.

Thanks for the warm welcome and I look forward to your recommendations.

Copy that. I’d seriously hunt for the absolute SHORTEST grass you can find if you’re gonna run in it. Seriously is a killer of differentials, bearings, and electronics. I absolutely understand, and can relate to not always having a choice spot to run, but definitely do your best set yourself up for success. 😉

Well you’re in luck it sounds like with the motor lol.. No $300-$1000 nonsense required. The stuff is not cheap, and what I recommend is NOT “economy” level, but it’s solid, and not garbage. There is also much more costly available, but it’s what has taken good care of ME for decades. They (Tekin) are also well known for their customer support/service IF the unthinkable should happen. I would also recommend a fan & mount considering you’re not always gonna be on ultra groomed dirt.

Your timing s also possibly a good thing.. IF you’re able to take advantage of it this soon after springing the truggy on the better half, or A-OK with sleeping on the couch, there are a handful of INSANE sales going on for Labor Day Wknd. Specifically that would absolutely cover everything you require. I’m aware of more than a couple spots that also do NOT charge sales tax, and offer free shipping after $100 purchase. These are ON TOP OF their Labor Day sales prices. I JUST picked up another Tekno truggy myself, and that maneuver was planned out for months in order to do it during these specific sales. 😎

Good luck with the new truck, a lot of people run HW or Tekin for the motor/esc. I'm currently using a HW esc and a Tekin motor. You want a decent amount of torque for your steering servo, I'm using a Protek 170 tbl. I have a 6500 and a 7500 battery, the 7500 is a bit overkill for racing. I don't remember having any problems with the build.
