3.3 sleeve replacement problem.

I just replaced the sleeve and piston on my 3.3 engine for my tmaxx. The problem is when the engine is at top dead center it gets really stiff and gets stuck. It's so stiff that the ez start will not turn the engine over. Is this normal for a new sleeve and piston? I don't see what the issue is. The connecting rod isn't getting caught up in the crank case at all and I put plenty of oil on the piston and inside of the sleeve.

If you took out the piston and sleeve, you would notice that if you pushed the piston into the sleeve, it would get stuck.
I forgot the term for it, cylinder pinch maybe, but yeah that's completely normal for new engines. The starter might not be strong enough, that's also normal and my only solution is getting a pullstart. Or you could also shim the cooling head to create a larger compression chamber, but that wouldn't really lower your pinch.

It’s called mechanical pinch. Your sleeve is TAPERED up to the top. You will need to pre-heat your engine to 220F prior to starting it to perform your break-in procedure. This is why the #1 rule in nitro RC is to ALWAYS rotate your piston around to BDC (bottom dead center) EVERY time you shut down the engine. If you do not, you will absolutely destroy it.

It’s because it’s new. The pinch is always extremely tight on a 3.3. Lots of people complain about the motor but, of OS, dynamite, and the 3.3, the Traxxas has the tightest pinch when new.


You should always preheat the motor on any nitro. But, it’s mandatory on a new 3.3 or it will get stuck. Expect that for at least the first 8-10 tanks. Then after being broke in, you’ll likely be able to start it cold with the starter.


But, I wouldn’t. It’s just hard on everything. Plus the heat makes it stay running after the first start on a motor that’s not warmed up. I will guarantee you that if you don’t preheat the motor, and just start it and take off, you are going to be doing the walk of shame to restart it once you get off the trigger after the first decent burst.
