With my tmaxx i dont know why but I will move the engine as close as possible to the transmission but the gear mesh is still too loose. Ill hold the clutch bell still with a flathead screwdriver and move the spur gear with my finger and there's a lot of play. I dont understand it. I'm thinking maybe the holes for the motor mount were incorrectly drilled from the factory. Anyone have any ideas?

How new or old is the truck? Are you the first owner? Do you know for a fact that all the parts are correct?

Are you sure you have the correct gears on the truck? No one swapped out the clutch or replaced the spur?
How worn out are the gears?

The truck ran at one point I assume???
I think its prob not poorly drilled chassis holes.

It there any chance the motor mount is installed incorrectly? If the motor is sitting too low, gears will not be able to mesh correctly.

Pics might be helpful if you have any.

I have a 22t clutch bell and a 54t spur gear. Both brand new. I got the truck used and have replaced pretty much all the parts on it. I've gotten the truck up and running with no issues except for this gear mesh issue. The motor mount is also new and it is mounted properly.

I'm not well versed in TMaxx gearing, but reading your inquiry had my thoughts aligning with Mike's.
My gut was telling me that you are trying to install a gearing arrangement that just won't fly without modifications.

I'm more familiar with Savages and know from experience that some gear combos just won't fly.
For example, you can't fit a 17/52 into a Savage, there just isn't enough room in the chassis for this and it will bind (if you can even fit it in).
The engine mount hits the TVP chassis preventing a proper alignment.
I seem to recall I could not align a 17/49 or an 18/49 combination (it was bound up - ie gnashing of gears).

On the other extreme, I'm certain that I can find spur gear and clutch-bell combinations that will exhibit the same misalignment issue as you describe with your TMaxx. There's just a gap that you can't close (without modifications - assuming there's enough space) ...

Is your truck a 3.3?

I am not a Traxxas guru but...
Jennysrc shows this...

58 teeth.
That could very well be your issue if jenny's info is correct.

54 ad 58 teeth are close in diameter but not close enough. Sounds like the same issue you are having.
Yes I'm running a 3.3. Thats a great point. I didnt think of that. Do you also have a tmaxx? If so what spur gear and clutch bell combo are you running?

I have a Revo and a Jato, both 3.3.

Again, not sure if this is accurate info but it does seem to back the possibility that your problem is down to replacing the spur gear.

If this was my project, I would be looking into a 58 tooth spur gear.

You could try to find a larger pinion gear too.

This shows that the ratio you have SHOULD work. I am unsure about why your's does not.

@Chubaka is really good with Traxxas. He may know the answer here.

Following this....I have tried using the wrong pitch gears and while I get the wrong one working , it never did adjust. tight or loose but never correct.

Stock gearing is 22/58 on a 3.3 tmaxx. My only guess would be things others have already suggested.

If you’ll post a couple pics of it mounted up I might could help you. I’m certain chubaka and others could.
