Just picked up this one from marketplace… it’s Gen8 based, but it’s got a UGRC Predator chassis, a Holmes hobbies crawlmaster sport 13t motor, a spektrum S614 axle mount steering servo, and brass portal covers.

Got a great deal, but it is definitely a “project”. First thing I had to get was new wheels. The ones it came with had a bunch of missing/stripped screws in the beadlock rings, and I didn’t like how they looked… I went with RC4WD’s white wagon wheels, they just seem to look right on a Scout… I’m running the Redcat Super Swampers with green Injora silicone inserts.

I took it out on the trails and found that it bound up real bad under load going forward… the rear suspension geometry was so bad that the rear pinion would point straight up under load and the driveshaft would completely bind up!! There are plenty of options for mounting the links, so a little reconfiguring got things right and now it’s nice and smooth!

After I straightened out the suspension I was able to drive it around a bit more and discovered that it has overdrive in the front.

The last thing I’m gonna do (for now) is add some LEDs to the headlights and taillights.

Always thought that was a good lookin' rig. Glad it's going to work out for you. :thumbs-up:

The wheel change was a solid decision! Looks real good now. Can't wait to see what else you change.
It's crazy how those stamped steelies look good on just about everything.

Updates!
I got the lights done!
I also decided that the front end was too “dark”, so I painted the grill silver.

I used some warm white 5mm LEDs and just wired them up to the receiver. I don’t really care about brake lights or turn signals, I’m happy with just the headlights and running lights in the rear…

I’ve also decided that the truck will be named “grape juice”.

I’m considering going the Roadkill route (bolting really nice parts on a pile of junk) and installing a Hobbywing Fusion SE motor/ESC combo in this truck, and I’m also toying with ideas for some bumpers to provide some protection for the body…

More updates, and a big step backwards…

Got the Hobbywing Fusion SE! Yay! But then I lost either the receiver or transmitter. Booo!

I got everything installed fine, but I could not get the throttle to calibrate on the new ESC, and the motor would not run at all. I tried going back to the brushed ESC/motor, and that motor would barely run in reverse. Huh.

So then I was worried I had fried the new ESC/motor. I figured I could try the receiver/transmitter combo from my SCX10 just to see what happens. I was able to calibrate the Fusion ESC no problem, and it ran well. Then I tried the brushed setup with the SCX10 receiver and that worked fine too.

I don’t have any way to determine if it’s the receiver or transmitter that is causing the problem, so it looks like I’m going to need a new tx/rx combo. Yes, I did try new batteries in the transmitter, same issues.

Do you have a Flysky GT3B yet? Everybody should have at least one of them lying around 😉

At $35 or so, it's the best bang for the buck radio.

Had the exact same issue when I swapped in the Hobbywing Fusion 1800kv FOC in my Ecto. It turned out to be the receiver. Not sure if I did something wrong or these ESCs are funky to get them to pair up.

I checked out the GT3B, looked a little klunky to me. I ended up going with a DumboRC for about the same price… I really like how it feels and works so far…

Now that it’s running I’ve discovered that the motor spins the wrong way… got the transmitter reversed for now, but I am going to pick up the program card to get it switched in the ESC, I’ll probably want to change some other settings as well…

Long story short… the guy that basically leads our little group of crawlers managed to get a spot on the local news in one of those “fun things to do in our city” type segments. Someone saw it and got all excited about all the damage our trucks would cause (erosion, killing plants, etc) and organized a protest and got the park rangers involved. Park rangers were cool as long as we stuck close to the walking trails, but of course the people who believe that they are in charge won’t accept actual authority…

I don’t want to get off the rails in this thread, so let’s just let that discussion end here please!!!
