I've noticed quite a few people with pics of their motors with zip ties on the top, does this help protect the motor in case of a flip-over?? Should I be putting these cable ties on my motoroto protect it?

you mean the cooling head. it helps so that when you flip you dont scratch up the cooling head. then it looks ugly. so yes it is for protection.

I use them to protect the head of my engine in case I flip over my ride. This is a definite "mod" to do if you have an offroad ride. I have them on all my buggies and MT.

Keeps the head "Purty"!

No matter how many zip ties you use you can still get some scratches.

Holy poop!! I think EP should get the Zip tie award!! I thought I had alot on mine: 8! But twelve?? Anyway, yep it's a necessity to ziptie the head. Especially when you spend like $40-$60 on an aftermarket one! Just my .02!

Yeah I flipped it once, and scuffed the cooling head already. I will be definiately putting some zip ties on there ASAP so that it stays safe ;)

I prefer to use 4 heavy gage zips rather then a lot of little ones. I have learned this from experience.

The larger thicker ones will hold up much better when they are needed. The plastic is thicker and will withstand the impact and road-rash that destroy the little ones. The little zips I have in my box are rated at 18 lbs, the next step up are rated at 75 lbs. Not that the rating in ln lbs means dittily-squat but the locking mechanism is stronger and the plastic is much thicker.

What happens during impact is that the head of the zip hits the dirt / pavement and ether gets ground off or the impact distorts them. Doesn't matter which one the result is the same, they come off. 4 larger ones will preform much better than several smaller ones.

When you install them add a drop of CA into the locking head to help them stay on during impact. Once it is dry cut off the un used strap.

Look at the attachment. This is what a large one looks like after a minor flip on dirt. Look at the little one next to it and ask yourself what would have happened to that one or even several of them. More isnt always better. Quality over quantity

They also absorb some of the impact as well. Instead of having a direct hit on one of the most expensive and immobile chunks on an rc (the engine), the soft plastic of the zip will absorb a lot of the impact regardless if it grinds away or not. It's that first touch on the ground that's the killer... unless of course it's flipping end over end at 50MPH, then it probably won't matter what you have on it.

It could save you from a busted engine mount, busted crank case and of course, a busted head.

Sweet deal guys......thanks for the info.....GOnna be looking out for the big and tough zip ties soon.

You will be limited to the size of the zip as to the opening in the head to thread them through. In the past I have used my roto tool to plain the sides of a zip that was to large to fit through the head hole. Again, use CA glue on the inside of the zip lock. It makes all the difference in the world.

I for one opt not to use zip ties. I am a bad driver and I have yet to really damage a head other than the soft original cast 2.5 head which everyone took a fin or two off of. I have scratches on all my heads, I feel this gives them character and people know I actually use my RC's LoL. Anyways to each his own but I just have never had enough reason to use them I guess and I land on my mill a lot. So if you are looking to protect from scrathes, go for it, other than that run the head naked is my advice. My downside would be any space of the head covered is space not available to disapait heat.

Actually I have one that you can't see any metal at all because of all the zip ties. I must say that one needed a little refining as I was having difficulty attaching a glow ignitor to it.

If memory serves the other one has 20 zip ties on it.

I'm a bad driver also .so why not just run it naked and take a chance!
