Hello I am new and got my first car. It will start but as soon as i take the glowplug lighter thing off the engine dies, and sometimes before then. I'm messing with the rich/lean setting screws like it says in the manual. Help

help? I'm going to end up breaking this thing ]= what do i do to get it started

Try resetting your HSN and LSN to the factory setting, CK your plug and make sure your glow plug heater is working. Does it do anything? Sound like it wants to start or does it just crank over?

I have set them to factory and gone and adjusted them again. right now it starts but it stops as soon as you take the glow plug heater off, or wait 10seconds. i have tried using 3 new glow plugs. but maybe they go bad quickly? anyway its making me mad the glow plug heater goes through batteries like crazy and its costing me a small fortune to do this

Did you set the needles to factory? Usually, factory settings for most engines is flush on both/all needles, with about .5mm width opening at idle (remove air filter and look down the intake, the gap should be about the thickness of a credit card). Those settings should get it to fire up, maybe a bit on the rich side.

If it still loads up and dies, try leaning the master needle just about 1/8th of a turn, until you can make a high speed pass with a noticeable blue smoke trail.

From there, to set the low needle (if it needs to be adjusted), let the truck idle for the count of 5, then punch the throttle. It should hesitate for a moment then take off.

If you have a hard time getting it to start, don't be afraid to up the idle point to about 15% or so. Just enough to make it run a hair above idle.

As soon as it starts, lower the idle point back down.

I had the same problem but the manual said for the first and second run to leaethe glow plug igniter in so I did for the 1st and on the 2nd there was no need. Hope that helps
