hey guys. gotta question for all you hardcore racers that race 1/8th scale buggy. When should you use swaybars ? On a short or long track ? Thx in advance.

I would think it depends on more of your style of driving and the type of turns. I run sway bars when I'm bashing.

I have come to understand that Sway Bars are used to keep the chassis from flexing. It also helps with traction so on turns, the tires will bite more then slide.

IMO

always, even when bashing, turning is improved greatly.

yeah.. i only race.. and run swaybars.. they dont keep the chassis from flexing.. but they help in cornering.. and all that.. you can get thick ones.. or thin ones.. also they are adjustable .. by moving the tension on the arm in or out.. stiffer will let the car roll less in the turns..

what do you mean by this?

When the car LEANS into the turn, like when you think its about to flip, thats roll.

Would this be considered as FLEXING?

No, that's just body roll, or the weight shifting on the suspension. Just like taking a turn too fast with your 1:1, your car will lean to one side.

Flexing would be like when power is applied and the centrifical force of the engine tweaks the chassis slightly one way while underpower.

just like diver said.. when you go into a turn.. say your turning left.. and the left front wheel is coming off the ground.. that is simply cuz of body roll.. so you can combat this by running stiffer sway bars in the car to keep the car from rolling so hard on to the right side.. that it will actually push the other arm and keep it on the ground

Shows what the sway bars do. The inside left tire is flying a bit, but I was wide open during the last half of the turn and was hauling ass. Props to EP for puttin his noggin on the line to get this shot. Without sway bars (can ya say Lightning RTR) I would have been sliding into the wall at this point. The LSD diff in the front helps reduce power loss in this situation (power isn't dumped out due to the flying wheel).

As great as that link is, nothing beats a great pic. Nice flat profile and lined up for what's ahead. Nice job Error !!!!
