I recently bought a used RC10B5M from a seller on eBay.

It was just a roller chassis, almost. The chassis was complete but needed a few things to get driving again.

I installed a Cayoti 17.5 turn brushless motor and esc, a Futaba receiver, a Hitec steering servo, a Hitec 31 tooth pinion gear, four pre-mounted JConcepts tires and a Team Associated antenna tube.

I ran the car around my living room tonight after getting the battery connector I order soldered on and when I let up on the throttle I hear a weird grinding kind of noise, here's a video I posted of it.

Does anyone know where that noise is coming from? It just occurred to me, I wonder if I didn't get the grub screw firmly screwed in on the pinion gear? I can check that later.

There isn't a lot of space on the chassis of the RC10B5M. I mounted the MyLaps transponder on its side next to the receiver. I think I'll have to take the transponder out and mount it flat, I could mount it on top of the carbon fiber battery strap that came with the car.

Take the motor out and roll the car on your floor. Any noise of funky feeling friction?
How does everything feel when its in your hands? Do you feel anything whrn you rotate the wheels by hand?

The sound almost sounds like your gear mesh is off but you can usually hear it accelerating too.

When you installed the motor, were you careful about setting the mesh correctly too?

Drag brake? It sounds perfecly normal to me. There isn't much to that transmission. If you just got that, fitst thing you should do is get some nice RC tools. A good hex wrench set at least. Tear it down and go through it and check all fluids, grease, bearings, etc. If you can build a lego kit, you can build an RC car. Grab the expllded view off the web.

Just running it won't tell you anything, but charge it up and go give it a blast 😉

Me with 2 of my race buggies and other cars I usually use Velcro and Velcro the transponder down on the servo

Sounds normal to me. Open can sensored race motors tend to be loud on decel because of strong magnets
I took the rear suspension and drive shafts apart last night far enough the check and adjust the diff, it was a little out of spec but not much. I adjusted it though it already seemed fine.

Do I have to program the esc to tell it how many turns the motor is? I held down the rear of the car last night after adjusting the diff, and goosed the throttle, the diff didn't slip, but instead of the front of the car coming off the ground the motor stalled.

Yeah, don't do that. That's a great way to overload your ESC and fry it. You check your diff adjustments by driving the car, and tuning from there.
