I used to race r/c trucks 15 yrs ago, now I want to get back into the r/c world. My problem is ; I don't know what to buy? I know I want an off-road, nitro car or truck, but: 2wd truck, 4wd 1/8 buggy, or 4wd monter truck? Here are some of my key points/guidelines.

1. around $500 buget
2.Break down of likly use: 50% primitive back yard track
30% yard/schoolyard/park thrashing
20% competitive racing@ track
3.what I want from the vehicle:
a. Handling: as in a buggy
b. Ground clearance; as in a truck
c. Duribility; because I haven't driven in awhile
d. Competitive; something that I can take to the track and not have to buy alot of after-market stuff to finish above last place.
e. Easy to tune/maint. eng.: I'm a mechanic, but new to nitro.

I've looked at the t-maxx2.5, Sportmaxx2.5, Hpi Savage 21, OFNA LX Pro, 7, 9.5,...???? Which, if any, of this calaber vehicle should I get? Can I race the large eng vehicles at my local track(new t-maxx vrs. old, the Pro w/ a .25 not a .21 eng.)?

What would you buy with the above in mind?

Thanks for any help that you can give on this,
Skuffknee Lee

Persoanlly, I would go with the savage, it is by far the best for what you would want, it is very durable, very fast, has alot of ground clearance, easy to use and just plain fun to drive. I would stay away from a stadium truck or buggy only due to there not as tough as a savage. They also are quite unweildly if you get a 2wd. As for a t-maxx, go for the savage instead, the t-maxx does have alot of aftermarket parts, but the savage is the best bang for the buck and wont need any hopups! Hope that helps!

The savage could go over his budget. The Traxxas T-Maxx was a 2.5racing engine(.15cc) and is very kick ass. Why would you need hop-ups for the t-maxx? You don't My maxx is completly stock with a fuel filter and some Monster Clawz rims. You don't HAVE to have hop-ups its just a plus.

Have you ever heard of a .21 racing class?? I havn't.

Man first you need to see what classes they have at your track. See what classes have a good amount of compeditors. Then I think you will see that a GT or Gas Truck is going to be your best bet for the things that you said you want.

I recommend a TL XXX-NT this is a great Stadium Truck AKA "G"
but there are some other good ones the AE truck and so on

1. These are lots more durable and require less maintance than a Monster truck.
2. Easy to work on and Tune.
3. Very fast handle very well
4. RAcing Monster Trucks is atleast 2X expensive in parts and hop-ups than racing a Stadium Truck.

good recomendations X and congrats on 1000 posts:D

If you decide to go with a stadium Truck I recommend the Losi XXX-NT.

If you decide to go with a monster Truck I recommend the HPI Savage.

If you decide to go with a 8th scale buggy, I recommend a Kyosho MP 7.5 (all 8th buggies are pricey if quality)

I have still found that stadium trucks are the most fun to run. This is just me. Maybe after a good hard year running the 8th buggy, I may change my mind. Monster trucks are good for jumping and plain ole bashing. Buggies are more ideal track runners. While stadium trucks are great all around.

Theres my half cent....

Wow, Chris, isn't that funny? Your 3 recommendations are the same cars you happen to own!!!! J/K!!!

I go with X. Find out what classes run at the track. No sense buying a car you want to race if you can't race it, right?

You got it man! Thats why I bought 'em!

This weather makes me want to move! I'm getting sick of taking stuff apart for no apparent reason......

Get a stadium truck!!!

Thanks for all the great info!

If anyone else has an opinion feel free to give it. The more info I have the better.

Thanks again,

savage all the way love my truck like a timex it just keeps on ticking even if you beat it with a bat just joking dont do that but trust me its very durable and fast:bow:

On the limit of $500, you might consider getting an old T-Maxx (the non=2.5 version) off of E-Bay. Then you could clean it up however you want (bigger engine, better parts, etc.), but I would be willing to bet that you could find a pretty decent set-up on E-Bay for a really good price.

Just think, you find a decent T for like $200, then you have $300 to get a better engine (if needed), better parts if needed, fuel and batteries. Not too bad.

These are just some of the trucks I found in a quick search of E-Bay, prices run between $150 and $230. There are more there and there are more expensive ones up for auction. It's all up to what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

sky maxx is right... ebay is the best way to go. Heck, you may be able to find a 2.5 for a really cheap. Just buy a maxx on ebay and use the rest of ur cash to hop it up. I wouldnt reccommend the savage. I have one, i love it, but i like my maxx wayyyy better. Why have a .21 sized car and engine when u can have more speed and agility in a maxx USING A .15!!!
