I'm just wondering what servo you guys are using because my JR650m just died and I need a new one. I"m looking at the hitec645 but I remember some of you guys saying they didn't last long. I'll be running it in my PCR.
 
I use the HS-645MG in my bugy, but only because the one in it died. The servo was in my savage for about 1 gallon and problems yet.
 
I have both. I like the 650 myself. The 645MG was in in my PCR but swapped it out since I am selling the MGT. More then enough turning power for me. Just get a better 6v RX pack.
 
Go for the 645. Aside from shorting one out due to total submersion in water I have yet to break one and it's the steering servo on all of my buggies. You can see from the video of memorial day weekend that I definately abuse my buggies to no end.
 
I think they're comparable. Besides a few people with the super expensive servos at the track attached to their $2500 buggies, most folks run the JR650 and some run the HiTec 645. Neither seem to be better then the other however I have seen two 645's break while the only 650 I've seen break was mine because I broke off a screw in the top peice. I just replaced that gear.
 
I'm gonna be using a 645MG for steering, and 625MG for thottle/brakes when I get my buggy. I'm usin that combo in my savage, and it gives excellent braking and steering.
 
i use airtronics 94359 for steering and 94360 for t/b. never a problem with either one even in hour long mains.
 
Well I broke down and bought the airtronics 94358Z. 160/200 and .13/.10.
 
That sounds like a nice servo. How much did that set you back?

On the topic of servos, my throttle servo could use a replacing - I'd like one with decent torque (120 or more?) with excellent speed. I've started to notice that when I let go of the gas, the throttle just isn't responsive enough. Which ones would you recommend for this?
 
you could go with an airtronics 94357 or 94360. both have 125 oz of torque and a transit speed of .07 seconds, but the 360 is all metal geared (not to mention about $30-35 higher). i like the 360 i have and will not change it out until something faster comes along with the same torque.
 
Yea, the 94360 sounds like it may be the ticket!

Well, the shop had no Airtronics servos, but they did have a very comparable Hitec one. It's the HS-5925MG digital servo, and it does 127.7oz in .08. All metal gears, dual bearings, etc. It was only 90 bucks so I grabbed it. It's very fast! But damn, it's loud when it's parked. It makes a humming sound. No amount of setting trim stops it really, you can only make it "less noisy." But it's really fast and it's awesome for a throttle servo.

While I was there, I saw they had the JR DS8611 Digital Servo and I just had to get it. It's not the fastest steering servo around (.15 I think, it's much faster then the 650) but at 6v it does 260oz. The thing is STRONG, my god, it's crazy. I can't wait to see how different the car handles over my JR 650. The servo is bigger then a sandard one. It's a little wider, and it fits perfectly into the Storm's tray, but what they fail to mention is that it's also a bit taller. Not much, maybe 1.5mm. So, I was able to get it mounted in there without too much trouble. I thought that it would be all sorts of heavy but it's not any heavier then my 650. So, if you think you might consider this servo, make sure you can fit it in your car.
 
the only problem I've seen with the digital servos on the t/b is that its real easy to burn them up. while they have awsome holding power they can burn themselves up trying to do something they are not capable of. the reason its so noisy is because it is picking up readings at a much faster rate than a standard servo. eack little 'tick' that a servo makes is the noise it makes from the signal it just recieved. a digital is picking these signals up so fast that instead of a buzzing sound, it will produce a higher pitched squeal because the readings are so much closer together.

make sure you set your exponentials right. its best to have the servo stop about .5 mm before the throttle is fully open and set the brakes so that the servo isnt trying to kill itself when you are at full brakes. you will only need enough braking action from the servo to slow the car quickly- not lock up all four tires! set it up like this and it should last a while.

Yea, the throttle servo at 127oz is a lot of torque for the thing, and when I hooked it up with 100% endpoints it was pretty crazy; the whole chassis would bend a little. I got it set up good now except for the brakes so we'll see what happens at the track so I can make proper adjustments.

The JR one doesn't make a high pitched sound when it's parked like the HiTec one, it's basically silent.

Neither of the servos were ultra-expensive so I thought I'd try the digital servos and see how they perform. The Hitec was $89.95 and the JR was $104.99. The owner of the shop said he really likes the DS8611 a lot; he uses them in his planes and said they're pretty reliable. He hasn't had any go bad yet and he's been using them all season. And the good thing for him, is that he can now use a single servo in places where he used to have to use dual servos. Heh, I wanna see someone put a pair of these in the LST - 520oz steering should be enough eh? =)
 
you're so right. i need to stop getting on here when its too late for me to think. maybe then more of what i say would make some sense...or maybe not.:)
 
For me its a 94357 for steering, and a 94737 for throttle.
 
yah my hitec also makes that annoying buzzing sound when it's just sitting there. i don't think it's that big of a deal, and besides, you can't hear it when the motor's running
 
Yea, it's no biggie. As long as this is pretty normal, which I kinda assumed it was, I don't mind it. I mean, it's loud for a servo but it's still not that loud. Other then the noise it seems like an excellent servo.
