WhaT the hell kind of boat is this, and how do you start the motor (what kind of drive thingy do I need.) I had to strip it down to de-gunk everythign, and have managed to start using a 7/16 socket on the tail of hte crank. The problem is that when the motor starts, it instantly loosens the nut, and the flywheel tries to come off. its a[edit] K&B 3.5 if it helps.

This can be mine for a whopping $60, I dont want to buy a POS. THe compression seems pretty good, and it seemed to run ok for the few seconds we let it run.

Thanks

You'll need a hand held starter like this: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL396&P=7

Sorry, this is quick and crude but the white part on the left side of the starter is made out a sticky concave rubber. It will need to mate up with the conical part on the top of the engine. the friction of the two surfaces will crank the engine over and thus start it.

You'll need a stand that supports the the entire boat otherwise you risk breaking the transom off. You'll also want to cover the stand with carpet or run the risk of scratching the surface of the bottom.

Another note, that engine is watercooled so you don't need to be in a complete rush to get it into the water but don't be lollygagging either.

I would also suggest having a kicker boat to fetch your toy in case you run out of fuel in the middle of the lake and need to retrieve it.

Another note for the first few runs I'd suggest having the engine slightly kicked under, meaning that if you drew an imaginary line parallel to the prop shaft the line would meet somewhere near the bottom of the bow vs being kicked out and the angle of the prop shaft would never touch the bottom of the boat.

I must add be wary if you have it kicked under too much you will "stuff it" wich is the bow gets submerged and you do a front flip which will more than likely damage the hull. If it looks like it will do this gradually kick it out about 1/16th of an inch at a time until she planes perfectly and gets some speed going.

Trust me on this one I used to race outboard hydroplanes as a kid both rc and 1:1.

Man, o man, I am learning real quick that there is no such thing as cheap in the RC hobby. Well, actually there is cheap, but walmart doesn't make quality stuff i want... My LHS wanted $50 for a starter for that thing!! I just rolled my eyes, cringed, and decided to try and get the boat for free from my buddy. If its going to cost me money to get into boats, I sure as hell am not going to pay alot to get this hoopty assed boat!

Just because it looks funny doesn't mean it isn't badass. Sprint tunnel hulls are fast. My dad and I used to race a boat similar to that one (Dumas Hot Shot 2) with a K&B 21 (same as that one), and it would do nearly 50 mph on glass. That's a race boat bro. And nearly any R/C of decent quality, whether it be a boat, car or plane, is gonna cost some scratch to get into. Once you have the equipment, you can use it on other stuff too. Support equipment is kind of costly, but once ya buy it, you generally don't have to buy it again.

The HotShot is an excellent performing boat. I built one similar to that one 25 years ago. My very first RC experience. If you have somewhere to run it they are a blast.

A few things not pictured that you will need are:
Radio Setup 75.00-300.00
2 servos 50.00-250.00
Fuel tank and lines, Linkage, and Batteries. 100.00

You are right, this hobby isn't cheep but it sure is fun.

EP,
Nice Pork Chop!

Check Tower for that starter, you can probably get it cheaper than $50 shipped.
If you use ad number 010C3 before the end of April you will save $20 on an order of $50 or more.

heh, you guys are telling me something I dont already know?? I started the year off with just one 1/10th scale nitro buggy (the POS kyosho inferno TR-15) That thing set me back $200. Now I have a stack of recipts from the LHS totaling hundreds of dollars, and now have a t-maxx, monster Gt, and a MBX-4 XR works. (and the kyosho, when it isnt broken, its fun) Being charlie cheap ass, and getting into a new hobby doesn't work very well. I'm just thankfull that when I'm in a mood to spend money, I have it burning a hole in my pocket!! All I need to do now is find about another $600 in stuff and I would have boats scratched off my list of stuff to own. I think I want to buy a battleship now!!

Heh, the guys at the LHS want me to get into planes. I think I have bought almost everything car related, now its time to drop another K or so for planes and boats....

I think that boats sweet, I seen one almost Identical to it on RcTv on The outdoor channel (Kick ass show btw) and the baby really screamed.
I bought one of them starters like that for my plane (a sullivan, which is one of the top brands) for like $45. And thats at the LHS so online I'm sure its ALOT cheaper. Good luck with the boat!! Keep me posted for sure. It was another chapter of Rc'in Ill eventually get into sometime soon I'm sure.. Good luck
