I'm ordering an HPI Savage x4.6 and it says to run 20% w/16% lubrication. I noticed the HPI fuel is 20% w 14%. Is that gonna work?

May I ask, what brands of fuel does your LHS carry? If they have Byrons 20% get that.

I have no idea. It's about an hours drive from me. I'm getting a rtr kit online and they had the HPI so I'm just going to order some with the truck. Seems odd their own fuel doesn't meet the specs they say to run. So I was just gonna ask you guys what I should run with the savage

It should be fine I'm running 20% with 12% oil in my Savage XL. My engine is an LRP ZR .32 spec2 and on that fuel it's an absolute screamer. So your stock 4.6 should do quite nicely on 20%.

I'm very pleased with the byrons race gen 2 rtr 20% with 16% lubrication. I've always ran byrons and when the other hobby shop didn't carry it, I ran traxxas. Byrons runs a lot better and the throttle reaponse is really good.

What about byrons rtr 20%? What's the difference? They are out of stock on byrons 20% racing fuel

Didn't realize you mentioned the rtr. Sorry . Does it just have more lube over the regular?

Odonnells is also a good brand. You can use 20-30% nitro and anywhere from 8-16% oil. Anything in that range will work you just have to tune your engine accordingly. I would probably stick with 12-16% oil until you get a good handle on tuning your engine. Bear in mind also that once you pick a fuel try to stick with it otherwise you'll have to retune your engine again. Make sure your fuel has at least some castor oil in it. I think most of them use a blend of castor and synthetic but just soemthing Id look out for.

I've been using Byrons 30/11 in all my mills

Odonnells race fuel just does not have enough lube in it. 8% oil is just not enough oil and I will not run any fuel under 12% lube. The rtr has more oil that the race but not by much. Byrons website lists their fuels and their oil content numbers. The only manufacturers that don't list their oil contents are traxxas and blue thunder if I'm not mistaken.

I wouldn't be too worried about the oil content. Unless you are buying a specific race fuel, anything with a 12-16% oil content will work just fine. IMO, anything with more than 16% oil will yield sluggish performance and fouled plugs.

If you can find some I would recommend either sidewinder 30/10 or strike team 30/8 both being made by Morgan fuels, werks 30/8 is also an excellent fuel as well. Either way I would try and stay as close to 10% oil content or less as 8% is more then enough as long as it's high quality like the fuels I mentioned. I'm not sure why they say to only run 20% nitro as 30% will start and tune much more easy as well as run cooler with more power. Because it requires a richer setting you end up flowing more volume of lubrication then 20% with the same content as well.

I run the Sidewinder 30/10 and love it, it also has additives so after run isn't "required". I still do it but on the rare occasion I can't, I'm not too concerned.

I use Blue Thunder 20% & Towerhobbies Towerpower 20% & I use after run oil as well

I think I'm gonna go with odonells rtr 20/12. I'd love to go 30/12 but I'm not sure since HPI recommends 20. I'd like more juice once it's broken in but I would have to retune. My 1st nitro so I want to learn what I'm doing before I start worrying about more pep. Sound good?
