That was a very good looking car, but in stock form that car ran like a mid to high 16 second quarter mile and topped out at about 120 MPH. The Bandit "T/A 6.6" Olds 403 only generated 200 HP and 325 ft-lbs of torque. The car was also very heavy at over 3800 lbs

My dad bought the car for me in 1983. The car was in mint condition, with the exception of the engine. It was siezed.
We had a an engine from a 1976 T/A put in.
I believe it was a 455 olds engine.
Mild work done to it.
It was a fresh rebuild, machined, and balanced, with a nice cam.

It was by no means a dragster, but it got up and went nicely.

Also, the smokey and the bandit car would squeel it's tires on gravel, sound like a mud runner (loud truck) part of the time and a indy car part of the time. I also think it had a 15 speed transmission as he was always shifting it... wasn't it an automatic? First of it's kind... manual w/clutch and automatic trans in one! Kind of reminds me of the 13 beauty rings that came off the car in the car chase in "Bullit". Stupid movies.

I agree, the Trans Am was a sweet car to look at. A little heavy and low for my taste.

"You sounded a lot Taller on the radio" great flick!

The car was available with either a 4-speed manual or the TH350 3-speed auto. The cars used to film the movie were auto cars. It was certainly a good looking car.

Yeah, definitly a sweet looking ride. Those movies sparked a huge selling spike for pontiac that year. I just watched a thing on TLC, disovery or history this morning called "Full Throttle". How it started, how it ended and everything in between. The point of the show is they take two of the same car, supe it up a little and race them. Whoever wins gets both. But in the interum, they go into the history of the car.

Definitly a nice ride. To bad the Delorian guy that designed it got all poo poo'd on by GMC and couldn't make it the way he really wanted. But then again, he was going to call it the Banshee and it would have looked more like a vette.
