I made a start on the engine the other day, even though I'm still waiting on parts. I may have mentioned this already, but I'm using the engine remove from my og Nitro Sport. I've had it running but I'm going to rebuild it anyway.

So took it apart and started cleaning. Sorry I forgot to take photos before cleaning. It was very dirty.

It took me quite a while to clean the cooling head.

Bearings were in tight. Cooked it @ 200°C and the bearings pretty much fell out. (Please ignore the filthy oven).

As you can see, the bearings were very dirty. This is after they soaked in WD40 for 2 days, then cleaning and heated.

More cleaning once the bearings were removed. The housing cleaning up better than I expected.

Reheated housing to 200°C again to installed new bearings and crankshaft. Bearings only needed a little push by hand to install and then oiled to help cool.

Nice job cleaning that up. :thumbs-up:

The piston and sleeve are in good condition as far as I can tell. No scoring and good compression when cold.

In saying that, I did buy a new set ahead of time, which I found on ebay, slightly discounted in a scratch & dent sale. Plus it was the only one in Australia. I think its just the packet thats damaged.
Not sure if I'll use it or not as I'll have to break it in. ??

I've also ordered a new wrist pin which I'll only use with the new piston, and a carby seal kit.

I'm back and I finished assembling the engine, today. I decided to refit the original piston and sleeve as they're in good condition and I can always replace it later if necessary. Its easy on this one as no Ez-Start. Can be done in situ.

New parts fitted:
  • Crank bearings
  • Head gaskets
  • OS LC3 glow plug since its cold weather now. I'll get a colder plug for summer.
  • Clutch shoes and spring
  • Clutch adapter nut
  • Clutch bell bearings and shims
  • Pull start
  • Exhaust header gasket and bolts
It's cleaned up better than I expected. The cooling head did lose most of the remaining blue anodise in the cleaning process but it's all uniform so still looks ok imo.

New clutch

Exhaust fitted. I may need to tweak it a little once it's fitted to the vehicle, to line up with the resonator.

She's cleaning up real nice! Kind of like the nerdy chick in Jr. High that turned into centerfold material later on. :thumbs-up:
Good analogy 😉

I mounted the tyres and was about to glue them, but found that none of my glues are usable. The two bottles of BSI tyre glue had set in the bottle and Zap CA glue is not .... um..... glueing. Guess I'll be ordering some on monday and I won't see it for another 10 days. 🙁😞

I just bought a used NS body off FB Marketplace. Don't see them often so I snatched it quickly. It's not in as good condition as my red one, but somewhat better than my blue one.

The lhs is faded and damaged and cooling holes drilled in windscreen. Missing wing and rear mount damage. Good spare basher body.

Looking at these bodies from the front, they remind me of John Force's top fuel funny car Mustangs. 😍
Nice find on that 'basher' body!!! 👍

It's ALIVE.

I temporarily fitted the exhaust and primed the fuel lines to see if it wanted run. After a few pulls(think I flooded it a little) it started.

Recorded it for your viewing pleasure.
You'll have to turn off mute to hear it.

First cold start:

2nd start and running:
(yes I forgot to remove the glow igniter 😆)

Can't wait to get it out.
I have carby at a factory tune at the moment so I'll need to do some tuning.

What's left to do:
  • Fit exhaust hanger (ordered)
  • Glue wheels (to order)
  • Exh coupler (ordered)
  • Oil air filter
  • Reinforce body
  • Wheel alignment
  • Test n Tune
  • Bash

I'm still not feeling well but need some hobby time.

Just fitted a more discreet exhaust coupler. It's a perfect fit on the header but slightly too big for the resonator, but I just tighten down the cable tie more.

It's a hpi coupler.

Yesterday I managed to get a bit done on this project.

I started by gluing the tyres.
Then did a quick wheel alignment.
1000031217.webp
1000031218.webp

I then added some E6000 to the body over the existing cracks and weak points. Just an attempt to hold it together and prolong its life.
1000031221.webp

The aftermarket exhaust system was interfering with the body, pushing it out against the lhr tyre. I tried adjusting the exhaust, bending the hanger etc but it didn't really help much.

So I decided, that since that section of body was already damaged and the worst part of that body, that I'd just cut it off. Problem solved.
There was even a body line to cut along.

I also made a spoiler from an old Traxxas shock oil packet I had laying around. It's far from perfect but I'm sure it'll get wiped off the first time it rolls, anyway.
