Warby's Traxxas Nitro Sport,
spare parts build

I purchased this broken, incomplete Traxxas Nitro sport with the intent of using it for spare parts for my original Nitro Sport Pro restoration, but it was in worse condition than I expected. None of the components were worth using on the resto build. The resto build ended up in new condition and is 99% finished.

So my plan B is to keep the resto build as a shelf queen and get this second one running, to be utilised as a basher. That way I won't damage the resto and I won't cry. 😆

Here's what I'm working will:

From what I can see, this is one of the first models of the Nitro Sports that Traxxas released. Either the 1998 or the 2001 model. That is, if the engine currently fitted to it, is the original. It has the regular TRX .15 engine in it, not the Pro version. It has a pull start and looks to have an aftermarket, bigger header and metal resonator.
It actually runs but you wouldn't think so by the looks of it.

It also came with a spare .15 Pro engine that was advertised as a runner but was seized when I received it. I did manage to free it up after lubricating and letting it soak but I never did tried to get it running before I pulled it apart. Kinda wish I did. I also didn't take many photos.

So I have 3 used .15 engines. Two are confirmed running. I'll probably use the Pro engine which was removed from my original Nitro Sport, which I've managed to get running on the test bench I made. It runs well and has plenty of compression. I'll give it a freshen up before I install it.

As you can see, it's in very poor condition. Dirty, rusty and some redneck repairs everywhere you look. (Look away of you're squeamish 🤮)

My plan is to get this dumpster fire running and usable, without going overboard. More budget friendly compared to the full resto build I just did. It doesn't need to look perfect. I also want to utilise the leftover new and used spare parts I have.

In saying that though, I will fully strip it down, inspect, clean and service everything.

I've already ordering some parts that are missing, including wheels, tyres, RX box, a RPM front bumper and servos. Some have arrive.

I'll going to use the JConcepts, Team Associated RC10GT authentic body #6131 which is fairly similar to the og Nitro Sport body. It not painted.

Omg. @Warby you are a warrior sir. My head hurts looking at all those parts! No doubt it’ll be perfect.
Yer maybe I'm a sucker for punishment, but I enjoy restoring old stuff. I'm not aiming for perfect this time. Just usable and semi reliable. But anything will be better than what it is now 😆

Well, congrats on your next, full, in depth, total resto project! 👍
Is it possible? Can a resto project be brought to 'driver/basher' level and then stop??? 🤔😲🤣

This is a great idea! You get to run one too!!! Good luck!!! 😎

i have a whole damn fleet that says yes, yes you can.
hint: being lazy and not giving a damn helps quite a bit.

Yep. I'm not going overboard with this one. In fact this build may be a bit boring. But I'm looking forward to running it when it's done.

Is anyone taking bets? How are the odds looking?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Coming soon... Warby's TRX Nitro Sport, spare parts builds' spare parts build 😝

We need an intervention. Who wants the talking pillow first?

Started cleaning parts today. The ultrasonic cleaner has paid for itself 3x by now. It was a good buy. Just have to be careful with cast aluminium and anodised parts.

Cleaned up the header. Ultrasonic clean, dremel, then 160grit sandpaper. It does have some dents(on the side not shown). Looks better in the photo then IRL.
