Traxxas Slash Transmission / Diff help!

I got a bunch of 2wd slashes for dirt cheap from an elderly neighbor who had them sitting in the garage for years. probably 10 years or so. I've started going through them so me and my family can have some fun and two of them i'm trying to build into respectable race rigs. One i'm keeping HCG and the other is being converted to LCG. I went through the transmissions of one of them and when i got everything back together the way it spun was kind of weird. I am spinning the input/slipper shaft from the 86 tooth gear for reference. The amount of resistance to spinning seemed to vary as it spun. If this were a clock it would spin freely from 12-6 but 6-9 would have a little bit of drag on it then it would spin freely again from 9-12 and start over. Any idea what i should be looking for? I ended up replacing all the bearings as they were in terrible shape, but i did not replace the transmission case (i do have a spare if needed). Is something out of alignment or is this somewhat normal for a slash transmission? I've built transmissions for TLR, associated, and a bunch of slashes but never felt them like this before.

The other transmissions were ball diffs or in the case of slashes i've built they were for oval racing so had no diff oil in them. am i just feeling the lockup action of the diff?

Hard to say, if the bearings are fine. It's definitely not diff action. Some gears or shafts could be deformed slightly. If it's only *slightly* harder to turn at certain angles I'd say it's fine.

yeah it's not like i have to force it, just notice a difference. These trucks were ran rough and not cared for and i've had to replace just about everything that wears. Thinking i might have missed something. I need to double check the diagram and make sure i didn't miss locations for the little shim washers

The shaft for the spur could be slightly bent, or, their could still be a bit of dirt somewhere you may have missed, or, although it is rare, depending on what type and where you got the bearings, it could be a defective bearing. I had that happen once on a brand new front bearing. She ran it maybe 100 feet, and the brand new double shielded bearing I just finished installing exploded.

ill have to check the shaft. if it's bent then literally every shaft on this truck was bent :hehe:
 
i think the transmission case is just too tweaked to hold it together. tore it down and rebuilt it 3 times with the same result. tearing it down and building a nearly new one next to it and i think some of the bearing recesses were wobbled out, and also the slipper clutch may have been deformed. Oh well, more money to Jenny's RC
 
take the top shaft out and make sure its straight. i went through the same problem fixing a friends Rustler back in the late 90's. the top shaft was bent. i should have noticed it sooner sense the spur was wobbling but i chalked it up to a warped spur.

Pull it apart... if any dirt got in there (and it does) sitting for that long may have settled on a gear. (some folks put weird lube in them) Get a safety pin, and run it in the grooves of every tooth on every gear. A guess, something could be there. You say it's a common area it gives that resistance, points to a gear or bent item up top. If it were a bearing, it'd be every 2 turns there but you replaced them. Otherwise, something could be bent? Are the spacers on the shafts for the middle gear? (them little washers used on the axles) Of course everything else mentioned above are directions to go. Also look for something rubbing up top.

Thanks i think it was the top shaft. I thought i had a minorly warped spur but went through every part and checked every part for defects and out of all the spare parts i put it back together with all the good stuff.
