My Slash has a Castle Monster 2/ 1512 2650kv combo in it with an 18/54 gearing. On 3s the truck is freaky fast and easily does quad backflips. On 4s it's even freakier. 18/54 is 3s gearing, if I were going to do extended run times on 4s I would drop the gearing to 16/54. I recommend sticking to a 3-4s 1/8th scale buggy motor. A long can truggy motor like a Castle 1515 has too much tork and will eat your drivetrain.
Castle stuff is pricey, and now that everything they make is US made they're more expensive.
I think the perfect Hobbywing high powered 3-4s system for a 1/10 scale Traxxas is a Max8/2500kv combo. Your truck will be a rager but at the same time the tork will be low enough so your drivetrain doesn't get twisted apart. I don't recommend going lower than 2500kv due to gearing limitations.
Are they that different? I tend to buy when stuff is on sale if I can and the HW sales are pretty great. I haven't had any castle stuff because it hasn't been on sale when I wanted it and most of my stuff is for racing and I just don't see many people using castle systems for racing
Different but fairly equal. I think Castle is higher quality but both systems perform equally well.
I own both systems in quantity. I have a lot of trucks, been at it for a while.

For my recommendations I was sticking to waterproof ESCs and non-vented motors. A 4s Raptor is a basher, I'm assuming this truck is going to see mud and lots of loose dirt.
