Is there any harm (besides not getting all engine power) in running your rig too rich? I will soon be getting my first rc and I'm thinking on takin the safe side and running rich unless there is side effects. Any Info will be appreciated.
oh btw MERRY CHRISTMAS:D!!!!!!

Well, a few side effects with at least one of which not being good for it.
1) fouled plugs
2) may not idle well
3) may not shift properly if it's two speed because not enough RPM's
4) may not warm up enough and actually wear the piston out quicker.

What you want to pay attention to for "rich" settings is plenty of smoke, but still runs pretty cleanly througout the RPM range. Average temps between 210-240 for rich usually, 230-260 for pretty decent tune, 240-280 for a bit on the lean side.

Good luck!

ok thanks alot. so in tuning a engine there are 2 screws right? the lsn and hsn? but i have heard of a idle screw alot where is this? i have read the forums on tuning i just need a little interepetation please

Idle screw will be a tiny little guy right on the carb. It'll probably look kinda like a set screw. What are you planning on gettin'?

buying a hpi mt. oh ok also what is the order of tuning. do i start from the hsn to lsn to idle screw or what?

Usually hsn. What you need to do is read the manual over and over when u get the truck. I don't mean read it for hours before ya start breaking it in, but be sure of what you're doin'. Adjust the needles by the book. Like these guys stress, 1/16 of a turn. Be patient when tuning, but whatever ya do, break it in by the instructions to a t. It'll make your rc time fun and keep ya outside rippin', not on the forums!

Hell yeah! Just get a temp gauge and ur set! Remember too, don't be too worried about the "perfect tune". If it rips, smokes, doesn't get to hot or cool, you should be good. Another thing, don't lean it to bring the temp up if it isn't runnin' rich. Use a sock or foil to restrict the air flow around the head. Lots of good threads about cold weather running on rcnt.

yea haha i didnt think about that but i mean I'm not gona have it so rich fuel is pouring out of the exhaust just rich enough where iw ont have to worry about blowing up my engine lol this stuff is too exspensive to tear it up on the first day. so in tuning the idle screw doesn't really matter or what. they say adjust the hsn first but then what

You adjust the idle as needed to keep it running. Once you have it tuned (HSN/LSN), you can lower the idle RPM's until the clutch stops dragging at idle. It should sit there and run at a low enough RPM to not engage the clutch.

Do you know what engine you have? What color is the cooling head?

The old HPI Nitro MT came stock with an engine that had a single needle carb, so you had a HSN only along with idle adjustment. It didn't have a LSN. I didn't care for that carb. If you tuned the HSN right, the low RPM's were off. If you tuned for good low RPM's (off the line), then the HSN was off.

After the HSN is good, adjust the LSN for a decent transfer from idle to accelleration without bogging or hesitating. You may also have to adjust the idle speed screw to keep the idle good without the vehicle creeping or stalling. Keep an eye on temps.

He's thinking about buying my MT. It has a Fantom FR15 in it. Three screw carb. I told him I had just broken it in and that I still have it a little rich. It has a nice stream of smoke but no raw fuel coming out the exhaust. Temp has been running 240-245 degrees in 60 degree weather. I just haven't leaned her out all the way yet. Told him to shoot for 260 degrees head temp and he should be making max power. The thing will rip now but I am sure he can squeez a little more out of her...

no I haven't bought it yet .thanks for all the help

hey guys this has nothing to do with this thread but i just contacted my lhs and they carry byron orignal 20% nitro fuel and i was wondering what your opinions on this fuel would be?

ok thats good to know because that is all my lhs carries and i dont want to have to order it everytime.

Seems to be a good fuel and the exhaust doesn't smell nearly as bad or burn your eyes nearly as bad as the trinity stuff. I've been using it for over a year now.

ok thanks alot. i can't wait to get my rig and try it out. i just hope it stops raining here its been rainin for 3 weeks straight now.
