I put about 6-8 hours into this one. Half of it was laying out the design. First time for me with XXX picture glue. I printed out the pic on TRACING PAPER. The idea was to keep it lightweight, but was too flimsy to work with really. I laid out the graphics with two different colored sharpies, but STILL got confused when cutting. Will consider color-hatching the areas next time. Colors used: FasFlorescent green and yellow, Fasescent Purple, Mixed Tan (to match the metal the hulk us busting through), black and Pactra White sealer..........

I learned alot with the picture glue. Even though it dries clear, you can still see any residue left behind around the edges. My pic was so thin that I brushed the glue on the body first, then matted the pic to it. You have to be careful not to trap air bubbles, cause you will see those too.

I took about 50 pics. Funny how purple looks blue in pictures. The color contrast looks better in person, since the hulk is wearing purple pants too.

Hope you enjoyed the journey. I'm always looking for constructive criticism on techniques how I might improve. Or hell, just say what you mean! hehe, thanks for looking.

looks good I have yet to try the XXX pic glue myself.

That looks awesome man... I really like your spike designs.. Very well laid out.. You've got some skillz bro.. The only thing I would add is some shading. It's tough to master, but it really sets off a paint job.. I still have a hard time getting my shading perfect, and it can really mess up a job if not done correctly.. I always hate the shading step... lol
Nice work..

Next time if you're feeling really froggy, paint it instead of gluing it. It's not as tough as you think. There's an easy way to do it using very fine point bristle brushes.

What you do is simply tape your picture on the outside of the body, facing inwards. Using a good black paint and a very fine point bristle brush, paint by the numbers. If you mess up, use a round toothpick to gently scrape up your mistakes and/or reshape your paint. It's not that difficult to do and yields great results. If you look in my thread titled Pig Paint, you'll see the Courage the Cowardly Dog body. All the characters in there were done using this technique.

If you look at the first picture, the mural is almost as bright as florescent colors. But then I guess the glue soaking into it, (and being backed with tan didn't help), made it darker. Probably a bad choice in paper used. I'll be trying the XXX picture glue again to get the bugs worked out, maybe try regular printer paper or a magazine clipping. Too bad the mural went dark, it would have brought the whole theme car together better.

I like your cartoon murals on the other thread Pig, I want to try some of those too. I've always liked "Ren".

The "inspiration" picture didn't have shading, so I blew it off too. <G> But I agree it would have added alot of depth to it. Shading is pretty much like freehand artwork, difficult for me as well. When I do that, I have to practice, practice, practice to make sure I have just the right amount of pressure, viscosity, and flow before putting the airbrush to body..

SPEAKING of freehand artwork, has anyone tried this new type of flame going around called "real flames" ? (uses no mask at all)

I did this lid for a friend, and yeah it will eventually get thrashed, even though he's a pretty good driver. But like you said it will look good getting there. The body concours event is next weekend for the end of the Spring Series Points Race where I race. I hope to have 4 entries, including two of my own.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Freehand fire is what you're looking for. Flames and fire are two different animals. Here's the best example of fire I've ever seen.

Here's another superhero for you done using a similar technique from what I described above. I didn't paint this one, and sadly, this painter hung up the brush (after only painting a handful of bodies). Phil Manro painted this awesome work. Instead of sticking the picture on the outside and painting in, he copied it from underneath using a sharpie, then added some freehand detail, flipped it over and painted mostly with a fine bristle brush.

Looks great from here Silent!!

That "fire" truck looks..um..words can't describe. WOW

Flash looks great too, so much time invested in these, would only be a shelf queen!!! And that I could not do!!

Yah, the FREEHAND FIRE looks too cool. Could someone post a tutorial how to do that stuff? I'd like to give it a try. :p:

And the Flashman was very well done. Looks much better than my Hulk. Thats what I was looking for Pig, something to strive for on my next one!

Thanks man, That means alot coming from you. It usually takes me a long time when designing and sketching. I sketch, erase, sketch, erase, sketch, erase..... you get the idea. You reminded me of something I did different with this one.....

My tip is: When erasing the sharpie sketch lines on the outside, use an INK ERASER vs a pencil eraser. The pencil eraser creates this "non-flow" thing for the sharpie ink, but with the INK ERASER, it does not !

Looks sweet! You do nice work! The body ya did before (in your avatar) is one of my favorite paintjobs! You got some skillz!

I suck at freehand creative designs... lol I end up second guessing myself, before I even lay it out.. It's something I really need to work on, to really get creative. I've probably tried every textbook paint trick I've ever read a tutorial on. Now it's time to create some tricks..
Your freehand designs look great man..
