My wife brought home a gallon of 30% instead of my usual 20%. When I went to return it, the LHS guy said "stick with the 30%, you'll love the benefits".
He said the jump to 30% would give me more power, cooler temps and the engine would be easier to tune as well as keeping a tune better. Any truth to any of these statements ?

what brand?i think your suppose to stick with the % you broke the motor in with.

You can change fuels just fine, as long as you don't do it all the time. With the 30% you will want to do a small breakin with the engine. Jsut run it slow for a few tanks
and let the engine get used to the new stuff.

It will give you more power and cooler temps, but I don't know about the tuning, I thought it would be a bit more touchy with 30% but I've never used it personally...

tuning with 30% is somewhat easier, simply because it makes more power, there is a bigger sweet spot.

the only thing to watch for is detonation. after a few tanks of the new fuel, and the engine is properly tuned for it. pull off the head. your looking for small signs of pitting or a combustion chamber thats "too clean" there should be residue in any engine. if you see signs of this, just add 1 thin copper shim to your engine and you will be fine.

K, I ran two tanks through it. The engine hadn't been run since last summer and the settings were the same from last summer when I ran it with 20%.
I ran the engine through different RPM, off and on the throttle. Air temp outside is low 40's and the engine temp never got above 183. Even with the tank near empty. It ran faster than it did with 20% and at 183 degrees it's probably a little on the rich side. It might have a little top end in her. I will definately look at the engine internals, just to make sure I haven't done any permanent damage. And if that looks good I guess I will stick with the 30%. Thanks for all the input.

Pulled the head off and the top of the piston has a dark bluish/green tint to it. The surface doesn't show any signs of pitting. It's not as smooth as the cylinder bore either. So, this is what I want, right ? I've said this before but I'm getting all this speed and punch from an economy RB 3 port. I can't imagine what speed and performance some of you guys get out of these 7,8 or 11 port engines. It gives me something to look forward to.

sounds good to me. lean it out enough so that the engine sounds like its clearing out, and you still have good smoke.

Agree. Would it be ok if I ran it rich for a few more tanks just too make sure things settle in with the 30% ?

your needle settings should be richer with the 30%, on my main i had to go from 3 out to almost 5 out on the hsn, with the same engine. so be careful. it is easier to tune but needs to be richened. later

actually, your wrong. when going up in nitro, you will need to lean out the engine.

As weird as it may seem Corrado is right. The extra nitro actually cools the engine down so you will need to lean your needles.

I leaned both the LSN and HSN just a tick and now the temps are hovering around 230-250. Picked up little speed in the process as well.
