I had one of the latest ipod nano's but it's now dead after going through the washer, so I'm looking for a new MP3 player.

All I want it to do is play MP3s, it doesn't need to have a camera on it, or play video, or a pretty screen. Just simply play MP3's and I'd like it even better if it didn't require special software installed on the computer to put songs on the MP3 player (ie. itunes).

Any suggestions other then a nano or shuffle?

You dare go against the will of Steve Jobs!!!!!!

How about a Sansa?

Most smart phones have an integrated mp3 player. That's what I've started using.

iPod is still your best bet Woodie....or get a Smartphone that plays MP3s and carry a single device. The Zune isn't bad either...but still need software to manage it.

Depends on how much you want to put on it. Bang for your buck, the 120gb Zune is the way to go. But that would require Zune software, so Sansa is a good next alternative.

Sansa is the poop if you want a stand alone.

For the price they can't be beat.

$58 for the 8gb version 2000 songs
$43 for the 4gb version 1000 songs
$33 for the 2gb version 500 songs

All are expandable with a microSD card you can preload with more music.

I bought my wife a sansa clip 4G a few years back. She wanted an iPod, but I knew "going to the gym" was going to be a short lived phase (3 months...) and she's hard on things that are electric (has gone through 4 phones in the past year)... so, I went the cheaper route and got her that.

To be honest, the little bugger sounds damn nice with decent headphones. Very rich/full/crisp sounding playback and pretty easy to use. I figured it would sound like crap and she would break it. Still uses it almost every day as she's wandering about.

Was kind of funny, at first she was upset because I didn't want to get her an ipod, then she saw people at the gym with them and realized how big they were... then she was happy that she had what I bought. She was probably mostly upset because I basically said "You won't go to the gym more than a few months and then decide it's stupid. Then you will end up catching the stupid thing on something and rip it off your arm or belt and break it."

I've been told many times that my "couth" is second to none!

Thanks guys, I see they have a Clip+ I think I'm gonna give that a try as it seems pretty basic and exactly what I'm looking for. A 2GB mp3 player will get me through the week of working out easily before I need to change up songs.

For a standalone, i really like the creative zen. I have an older 4gb one and its got great sound, long battery life and a built in fm radio.
