  1. Bashing
I just got my first rc truck (a second-hand t-maxx, for whoever hasn't read that already) and I am assembling a list of what I need to get. Before this I did planes and helis, so I have most, if not all, of the tools that I should need already.

As far as car parts goes, I have a few things I figure I should buy based on what I've read on here, and common sense.

  • new filters
  • new fuel lines
  • nitro fuel (is there a difference between plane/car nitro?)
  • spare glow plugs
  • hump pack
  • spare gears (spur...?)

Which leads me into two questions... actually three.

  1. Is there anything else that should be on my list?
  2. Since my car was used (gently), is there any maintenance you guys would recommend, other then the stuff listed in the stickies?
  3. The nearest hobby shop is a good 40 minutes away. Are there any good (read:cheap) online places to order parts you guys use, or am I better off dealing with a real person?

Not sure about what is used for planes, but you should get 20% nitro for your maxx. Stay away from the Traxxas Topfuel. Yes, a spur gear, it is the large black gear on the back of your trans.

Clean the filter after every couple of runs or if it looks really dirty, use WD40 or after run oil.

One more thing you might want to buy is a fuel filter if you dont already have one.

I use the Phat Daddy fuel filter by Dynamite. Never had a problem. There are plenty of online stores to use such as Tower Hobbies, A Main Hobbies and Horizon Hobbies. I prefer to support my local hobby shop (lhs) do that if I need a part now they are there. I am almost an hour from my lhs, so I can understand your reluctance to go in every time you break 1 part.

I think with the quantity of stuff I'll be ordering this time, It could warrant a trip to the hobby shop. Although, for small/spare parts, I might have to stick to online purchases. It's hardly worth spending $15 in gas to get $5 in parts.

So in addition to my above list, I have to include a spur gear, a fuel filter, some 20% nitro (not Traxxas) and after run oil. (already have plenty of WD40 :D )

Which brings me to another question: what's the deal with after run oil? I've seen a number of people say that it is absolutely necessary to have. Never did anything similar with planes, it was always just fuel up and go, then drain the tank when you're done.

In 40yrs i have never used after run oil in any of my engines and never had one problem with any of them.I would say its a matter of your own mantiance routine.:D

I can't speak to any of the car engines, because I never worked with any of them, but like I said before, with the planes I had (only flew OS engines in them) I never performed any maintenance, except for draining the tank when I was done flying. Worked fine for me.

Although, if it really does make a noticeable difference somehow, I wouldn't want to ignore the option. All I really know so far is that most people I've seen recommend putting a few drops in the engine and carb. Obviously it's not necessary, but is there a difference?

Aircraft nitro has a higher nitro content, so stick with car/truck nitro fuel.

might want to pick up some spar bulkheads and pins and maybe rpm arms unless its already get them :-) wow i can't believe how often i hear on here how you lhs's are upwards of an hour away, i have 4 around me all within 30mins(or less) from me. and about 3 more within an hour away from me.

Well consider yourself lucky, I wish I had a hobby shop that close by, it would make me so much happier. 40 is the closest, and after that its an hour - without traffic - in Providence. It's really inconvenient.

The one that is ~40 minutes away isn't too bad, but they are a little small. They used to have a nice asphalt track outside, but recently covered it in dirt and made it off road. The problem? Electric off-road only. And they are supposed to be building a new asphalt something in the future. It's too bad I don't use electric. I had a few electric planes, and even though they are easier to take care of, I really hate depending on batteries to be charged every time, and the short time you get with them. Not that I plan to race anyways.

I added those parts to the list though. Man, am I gonna seem like a noob walking in there asking for all these parts, and knowing almost squat about them. (actually, thats not true. I got the basic idea for most of the stuff, I have to study some exploded views more I think.)

In other news, I just got the email from the seller of my T-maxx. says he paid $85 for shipping. I feel bad now, cause I have a feeling he sold it to be at a cheap price because he thought the shipping would probably be less.

Never feel bad if you got a good deal, and if HE paid $85 for shipping, YOU got a good deal. :)

Interestingly enough, I just checked on the aircraft fuel I use, and it's 15%. Of course, I'm going to get something different to run my truck with.

And I don't feel bad that I got a good deal (I feel awesome), but I do feel sorry for the guy, cause he definitely must have expected the shipping to be way less than it ended up being. That said, it's still his own fault.

Now whats this about the bulkheads and pins? I'm still a little fuzzy on this...

I feel you, It's a 64 mile round trip to my LHS.:whhooo:

Either get aluminum bulks or ebay some stockers for spares.
Good deal for both front & rear BIN:: http://cgi.ebay.com/T-E-Maxx-3-3-2-...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f0a18242a
Or bid on them to try to get them cheaper:: Front Bulk,Rear Bulk

The stock A~arm hinge pins are junk, your best choices are the Traxxas Stainless steel pins , Lundsford titanium pins, FLM Hardened steel pins
I put a small dab of either auto RTV or shoe goo on the little E~clips to help retain them, I also got some replacement 2mm E~clips.

Also bearings at my LHS have a stupidly huge markup(he gets'm for $1 and sells them for $4-8:whhooo:), I now get all my bearings at AvidRC.com(same place LHS gets them):hehe:.
Most of them are only $1 each which allows me to keep on hand every bearing I need with extras.

Put bearings in the steering post arms & the throttle pivot.
I also replace Clutch Bell bearings the minute they roll super free, I have found it save's a lot of headaches.

I also keep extra Traxxas Clutch kits or MIP Clutch kits & MIP clutch springs around.

fast eddy's has bearings .99 apiece and free shipping for $20 order and thats fo metal jacket bearings!!! I redid all the bearings in my classic tmaxx,my 3.3 tmaxx, and my e-maxx fo $93.... and I think they are startiing bearing sets now aswell..

fo the shipping thats crazy I bought 2 tmaxx's of a guy when I first looked though this foum I can't remembe his name but it was 2 maxx's and a bunch of extas reall heavy box and I think it was $40 fo shipping from texas to maine in a week or less... $85 thats crazy fo just one maxx!!!!

Well goodluck and you got the list and the want so now u gotta get that maxx and start bashing!!! and yes extra clutch kits a must!!! you will have to wait and see what clutch you maxx has on it though befoe you buy that part...

@Nitro - thats one hell of a list. I've already added the stuff to my shopping list. Gonna head out to my not-so-local LHS later today I think and see what I can get. Appreciate it.

As for bearings, is there somewhere that lists all of them? They don't seem to have kits for the T-maxx, and I haven't found much. I guess i could just go through the exploded views though.

And yeah, that shipping did seem awfully expensive to me. There was a lot of extra stuff he included too, so I'm thinking he either used a really big (bigger then necessary) box, or his post office is just a rip off. Or he was trying to guilt me into giving him more, but he seemed like a nice guy, so I doubt that.

Are your bulkheads broken? It might be a waste of money to go out and buy spare bulkheads, when you dont yet have a need to put new ones on, they can be expensive. Unless of course you dont mine spending the money to put a good set on. Although, when you are that far away from your lhs, it can't hurt to have everything you need in your toolbax already. I have got 5 lhs all within a 30 minute drive, the one closest to me is about a block away....gotta love that!!!

Yeah, the nitro that I use says that it has after run oil already added to it, but I just put some in the carb and down the glow hole anyways, all part of my maintenance routine every time I get home from a run.

Just found a parts list from the traxxas website that lists all of the necessary bearings/bushings for the T-maxx 2.5. That saved me a bit of work, thank god.

The list the prices too, but they are crazy if they think I'm gonna pay them $8 for a single one. Thanks guys for the suggestions for the $1 ones.

I could see it lessing the chance of scoring or seziure.(it won't hurt i just don't see it as a necssity) When i mentioned never using it that was 40yrs of plans, cars, boats, helis i've used OS for the most part of that time.:D

I'm sure that you are right in saying that it is not a necessity, but after run oil is cheap insurance when you compare to the cost of a new motor.

I can understand your point. The manual says you can use WD-40, and I only have like 25 cans of that stuff around, so maybe i'll do that.

Good news though, I was just looking over some pics that the guy sent me. (one of which is attached) I think I see 2 chassis braces, 5(?) bulkheads, some arms, bumpers near the top, maybe shock towers. I'm not good enough to tell what everything is by sight yet. And the pics really aren't that great. I also confirmed that there are a few Integy parts, but I guess I'll play that out and replace them as needed/when they break.

At least my list of stuff got that much smaller:D

Holy crap!! lots of parts there. Looks like you have got 2 aluminum bulks, and 3 stock grey plastic bulks, the chassis braces look like stock grey also, a roll cage, center aluminum skid plate (blue Traxxas), 3 spur gears, Traxxas wheelie bar.....you got hooked up!!! Really nice score.

Yeah, if you have already got Integy parts, just wait until something breaks and then replace, like I said before, you might not have any issues with Integy.
