I know the dangers of feeding live food to snakes. Normally I will knock the food senseless against a solid object (usually the wall) then dangle it in front of my snakes. I will also keep a pair of heavy leather gloves handy just in case I have to intervene.
Today was the first chance I had to feed my snakes in a month due to missions in faraway lands. Anyway I fed my biggest first. Without even thinking I just dumped the jumbo rat out of the box right into the bathtub where my snakes was waiting for his meal. Once he snatched it I remembered I had not knocked the rat senseless but I figured everything would turn out alright.
I walked out of the room for a minute of two and came back in to see more blood than usual. The rat before she died had gotten a piece of my snake. While the bite was not life threatening it still ticked me off that I had not given the rat a whack before offering it to my snake. Live and learn. Here are some of the pics I took:
You can notice some blood on my snakes belly and also pooling in the tub:
This pic shows the bite mark on his back:
I just love this one because of how stretched his mouth is taking rat #2:
Also here's something I have never had happen to me. One of my other males has always been a bit nippy. Almost every time I try to pick him up from any angle other than flat handed from underneath he will strike me. He's mellow when I am handling him but for some reason he does not like the initial pick up. Anyway, he struck me today and low and behold what I thought was a flake of skin from his strike ended up being one of his teeth imbeded in my finger. Definately a first for me. I tried multiple times to get a clear pic of it but to no avail. These were the clearest pics. You can notice it a bit past the fingernail going towards my hand.
