Does he want 2WD or 4WD? In that price range there's a few 2WD options but not many 4WD

Traxxas Slash (2WD). New BL2s or VXL.
Arrma Senton 3S BLX. 4x4 would be better. (The 4x2 versions don't preform well as its 2wd on a 4wd chassis) But I believe its 340.
Associated SC10 pro 2 (2wd)

Traxxas - parts are everywhere and anywhere
Arrma - Parts are somewhat everywhere
Associated parts - would be stocked at shops that have a track (more race brand oriented)
All brands should be stocked on AMain, Jennys RC (Jennys doesn't do associated I think) AbsoluteHobbyz, amazon and ebay.

Losi / TLR SCTEs - 4WD - you can find used rollers on ebay in that price range, but if you want to build it up to a full RTR it would probably turn into 500 bucks real quick. - Discontinued kit - replacement parts are very few to none these days.

Tekno (you dont wanna know the price)

If your friends fine with 2wd, I'd go with something from Team Associated.

The Slash isn't a bad truck and parts are easier to get, it's just a much more dated platform, it's very prone to traction rolling with the stock chassis (yes you can buy a LCG chassis, but most other SCTs are LCG from the get-go).
