Ok first off, I have a Savage 25. I am in the market for a new truck since my son and I can't share very well :). I am going to give him the Savage and get me something else. However, I would really like something with a little more power than the Savage.

My friend has a tmaxx and it seems that his has more pickup than the savage. I must mention he only has a pipe. I have 3 speed tranny and pipe. However I have not really dialed in the tune yet.

I am thinking about getting a Revo. Is this the same motor in the Tmaxx (they are the same size, correct)? If not, how do they compare in power.
Do you think I sound like a canadit for a Savage 4.6SS? Will this bring in alot of power? From the way it looks most is the same as the 25 except the tires and motor?

All I do is bash. I don't get into major jumps or nothing. So far, I just run it up and down the road and take it out in the field and climb small dirt hills. This summer I know I will be doing some bash racing in a flat field.

I would steer clear of the t-maxx. That would be your weakest choice.

The t-maxx and revo have similar engines, but not exact

T-maxx has the 2.5 with the silver head.
Revo has the 2.5r with the blue head.

The revo would be a good choice as they are cheap to fix, and a quick truck out of the box.

However, the Savage SS 4.6 in my opinion would be the best choice for bashing, but the downside is the cost. The money of the SS, you have to build, plus the cost of two servos and a radio. Decent equipment along with the truck would set you back about $650-$750 depending on what you choose for radio gear.

It all depends on if you like the design of the savage or not, and how much money you want to spend.

Personally, I'd buy a savage from an individual, and set a new engine of your choice on it.

Happy hunting.

hmm, I guess this brings me to a new Idea. Get my son a cheaper buggy (they look more durable as he is 7) and drop a new engine in the savage I have.

What would you say the best drop in motor would be. I have searched this, but I am unsure what with fit WITHOUT major modifications

Savage 4.6!!!! I have had A few Maxx's a Revo and a Savage 25 and none of them or in the same league as the 4.6.If your looking for more power than you need the 4.6 is for you...now go get it!

Pretty much any pull start type engine will work in your truck. There are alot of opinions when it comes to the "best" engine.

I personally have a wasp .28 in mine. It runs great, and is more than enough power for that truck. Probably too much, but hey, that's what makes it fun, right?

You can also get the 4.6 engine from tower here

Equipt and almost ready to drop in.

That would put you with an extra engine for the buggy, and plenty of power for the savy.

nice, I think I may go that way. If I remember the 4.6 is the same as .28? Am I totaly in the wrong? Would I see a big difference in low end torque with the 3 speed tranny? Does your savage wheely with the .28? With the same stock gearing, I am just curious to where the extra power will go to. I am hoping evenly in low and top end.

Oh, and I assume everything is pretty standard (flywheel, clutch..etc). I can just reuse the old componets from the 25...(header and pipe)?

Yes, all of the clutch assembly will come right off of the s-25 and go on the 4.6.

4.6 doesn't necessarily mean .28 on all engines, but in this one's case, it does.

I just edited my post not realizing that you replied. Do you know if the header will fit also? I am getting my list together to run to my LHS and get some new stuff!

I get rolling wheelies very very easy geared 17/47 and I'm running a 3 speed. The body that I have been using was used for over a month on my Revo with no damage...After break in plus 4 tanks it has holes on the roof from the truck flipping on it's lid so muck LOL It's a blast to drive. From what I can tell everything should fit except the one way bearing and maybe the motor mount but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Ok, I am going to be atleast getting a .28 motor!. It seems that my LHS has the wasp .28 cheaper than the Nitro Star. I hate being a noob!

You have to learn some time.... we all were new once.

Keep in mind a lot of folks with the high horsepower engines chase other problems as well. Burnt up spurs, shoes, snapped dog bones... But the videos sure look fun!

don't know if u considered this, but HPI offers an engine "trade in" program. I'm not 100% sure of the cost, but i remember back in the day they took in old .21's and sent the user the new .25's for like 99 bucks. you might want to look at that option aswell.

Yea, I heard about the trade up program, but for a mill that has less than 3/4 gallon..I rather keep it for a spare. I went ahead and bought the wasp .28/ it was 150.00 at the LHS. They were out of the NS 4.6. All well, I hope this one is a good one! Oh and I picked up the Nitro evader for my son. We just broke it in a few minutes ago. He is impressed and tuned really easy.

I am working on my Savage right now. To bad it will be raining alot this week. The temperatue break we had in Indiana made it nice to tune!

Careful with the wasp. It makes alot of power. I think you have the one with the blue crank case and the silver head, right?

Make sure you have the four spider diff mod before hammering it too hard. Mine has new dogbones, and wheel nuts.

Like beason said, keep extra turbo plugs. The regular ones don't even fit.

i had the wasp installed on my savage and it was wicked as all get out ,locked in second gear and geared 15/49 and it would do rolling wheelies and flips with out a problem ,like busted and beason say make sure you have the spider gear mod and if you dont totally thrash it all the time it should hold up rather well for you
most important have fun
take care

Well, I can say I am pleased with the Wasp! just finshed break it and wheelied the thing over from a hard take off! I have not leaned it out from break in settings yet! That is what I am looking for. I am happy for the price vs. performance. This thing goes where ever I want it to go. I will have to go back to sticky and read up again on the spider mod. My sons Evader didn't hold up to well today, I need a new front shock mount and a rear buckle (?). Another trip to the hobby store I go!

Thanks for the awsome suggestions! I can't be more pleased! BTW. wasp normal Opererating temps are 280F??? True?

Is that what it's running at, or is that what you heard? Mine runs about 200-220F.

If you want to see if you have the spider mod done. Check to see if you have the cam type servo saver installed (one side of the steering rods will be purple and the other black.

If not, contact HPI and have them send you a set. They should've come in the box, or installed, one of the two.

The servo saver and spider mod are the two "must have" upgrades on any savage.

Don't forget about the stress warranty on the duratrax truck. You can go to the hobby shop and buy replacements.. but keep the broken parts. I do not have a duratrax, but I do know that they are good about sending in replacement parts. A friend of mine had the electric evader and they hooked him up all the time with parts. That way you are back up and running fast and you get free backup parts in the mail.
