Router Help

So I got a wireless router and I've been reading what to do over and over....I'm supposed to hook it up through my modem (which I assume is the little (3x3) box that the cable goes into and then to my computer) and then go through with setting up the connection via the internet since my router didnt come with a disk, BUT when I hook it up to the router, like it shows, I lose internet, thus leaving me unable to finish it........HELP.

Are you getting an IP from the router at all? You'll likely have an IP similar to this if you are: 192.168.1.xxx

How will I know if I'm getting an IP? I have it unhooked so I can be on here right now.

Ok try this.. first connect everything in this order:

Cable modem
|
|
V
Router
|
|
V
Computer

Restart your computer and then click on the START button, RUN and type in CMD and press enter. A new black box should open and then type in ipconfig - what does it say?

Sometimes you have to power cycle your cable modem too to get a new IP and for the router to pick it up and start configuring...

Also, go to your browser and type in 192.168.1.1, that's usually the IP for the router and you can go into the router settings manually if need be, but usually the auto setup works.

When I added one to my mother-in-law's PC I had to power cycle her cable modem.

Also make sure your Cat 5e network cable from the cable modem is connected to the "uplink" or "in" port on the router and not one of the numbered ports (1,2,3, or 4). Then your PC's network card gets another Cat 5e cable from it to any of the numbered port you want to use...

what kind of router is it? 192.168.2.1 is the ip for a belkin to login into it. they are a pain sometimes to get configured properly. and what mark said is right on the money for cable routing.

Its a Netgear. To cycle the power you just mean unplug it for a bit and plug it back in or what?

Yup, if it is like my mother-in-law's cable modem there's no power switch, so you just have to unplug the power cord for 10 seconds or so and then plug it back in. See what that does for ya...

Ensure everything is connected in the order I listed above. Then on the back of the router there is usually a reset button. With the router plugged in press and hold that reset button for about 30-40 seconds then release. Wait a minute then power cycle the router. Then see what IP address you're getting.

What this is going to do is reset all the settings on the router to factory settings giving you a clean slate to work from instead of having to try to work with any settings that might have already been setup by someone else.

216.57.165.144 looks to be an external IP address - when you're behind the router you should get an internal IP address. Most factory defaults would be something along the lines of 192.168.1.xxX.

I can't get it to do anything different. I just wanted it so I can get online with my ps3 and buy a game upgrade.....Can I take my ps3 to somewhere that has wireless, like a local grocery store parking lot that I used to use my laptop at, and get online like that?

Did you got to the netgear website and download the instructions for your unit?

Do so and it will give you the IP address so you can configure the router using the instructions. The IP address will by typed in to your web browser just like you do when you go to a website. You just type the string of numbers as shown only. What looks like a website, but actually is the routers configuration settings will pop-up and you will then follow the instructions.

To answer your last question...yes would need to go to someplace that has free WiFi in order for your PS3 to connect. Most places have secured networks, but around here McDonald's does not. PITA since you will need some sort of screen to see what you are doing and also the controller.

Your router will work fine though once you get access to the configuration settings.

But I can't go online with the router plugged in to type the IP in, well I can but it wont load a page. And yeah, I downloaded the manual and did what it said....

You don't need to be able to go online to access the router settings.

Open up My Documents and type the IP into the Address line.

What does it say on the screen after you hit search?

I dont have a My Documents, is Documents the same thing? This is Vista by the way. I searched it in Documents and nothing is found.

Open anything that will give you a browser bar so you can enter the IP.

NetGear out of the box should be 192.168.1.1 I believe, BUT your desktop machine needs to be setup to obtain an IP Address automatically in order for that to work ;-) If your desktop has a hard entered IP Address.....your machine will always pull that IP Address

Go to a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and post a screenshot of that for me. You can also view the setting by going to Control Panel > Network > Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP Properties

The one that says v6 says it obtains the IP automatically but the v4 has my ip typed in...

MotoGod for the win! I changed the v4 to auto and it all started working so I followed the steps and am now online with it. Thanks bro! And thanks for the help everyone else.
